ELECTION, n. Long and costly procedure to determine which of two (sometimes more) claimants for a position in Government shall succeed. The process entails unrepresentative campaigns that confuse the public and enrich the media, and inaccurate tallies of votes that infuriate statisticians and advocates, jam the courts, and enrich the lawyers and (again) the media. Ultimately, decisions are made by the toss of a coin - which could have been done in the first place with equally satisfactory results and far less time, money and aggravation. See BODY.
