The New Millennium Devil's Dictionary - Homeland Security

9/11 | bush | defense | homeland security | humor | New Millennium Devil's Dictionary | politics | satire

HOMELAND SECURITY, phr. Fortress Amerika. A stockade to keep out the physicians while the patient grows blind, deaf, and dangerously obese.

Many societies throughout history have built elaborate and expensive walls in an effort to preserve their nation or culture: the Great Wall of China, Hadrian’s Wall built by Rome in Britain, France’s Maginot Line, Nazi Germany’s West Wall, and the Soviet empire’s Berlin Wall. None of the polities responsible for erecting these walls has survived, and, for the most part, neither have the walls. Portions of the Great Wall of China are preserved as monuments; fragments of the Berlin Wall are sold as souvenirs and adorn private and public art galleries; in segments of the Maginot Line, farmers grow mushrooms.
      “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!
Nothing besides remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Oh absolutely. I don't think that I've gone a day in the last 5 years or so that I haven't had this poem trapped in the back of my mind.

I found a link ...

... to a picture of the autograph manuscript of the poem, together with some explanatory text. I added the link to the blog - click on "Shelley".

Next time I am in the UK, I

Next time I am in the UK, I have to at least make an effort to see it in person.

And on that note (this will be more connected to the overall blog post than it seems), one thing I love about visiting British museums is that the historical documents are right there. Here we put our historical treasures behind 3 ft. thick bullet-proof, fire-proof, viewer participation-proof glass. There, the history is barely separated from the viewer. The overall thought I'm left with from each is very contrasting. The American documents leave the feeling that these are the most sacred documents, and if they cease to exist, the meaning behind them would too. The British historical items seem to be easily accessible. It sends the message that even if the items themselves do not continue, Britain will. One need only look to Old Sarum/Salisbury Cathedral to see this is true. And for a country ravaged by plague, fire, violence, bombings, and the threat of outside nations, I find this an appropriate message.

The TRUTH about BLOGCHARM

I didn't want to write a blog on this so I figured I'd just randomly post it.
Ok, I saw a link for Blogcharm (another paid blogging site) so I decided to check into it.
I transfered about 15 of my blogs to this site. It's a very simple site. Not nearly as good as bloggerparty, BUT I made money. In 24 hours I made 14 cents.
Now, I'm not knocking bloggerparty at all cuz I really do like this site better, BUT I do suggest signing up with blogcharm too.
Here's a link: I don't know if you make money for referrals or not, but here it is,
