The New Millennium Devil's Dictionary - Happiness

Happiness | humor | New Millennium Devil's Dictionary | satire

HAPPINESS, n. A state of euphoric detachment from reality, accompanied either by ignorance of the facts or a refusal to acknowledge them.

Beware, my son, of the pursuit of happiness,
         lest it pursue you.
There are many who have sold their souls to Shiva
who insist upon a smile for every occasion
and can offer a wide selection at reasonable prices.
If your happiness depends on persons,
you are their slave, and they will take you to market.
There are many who will take all you have as rightfully theirs.
If your happiness depends on things,
they own you, and they will betray you.
There are many who will gladly add you to their mailing lists.
If your happiness depends on pills or vapours,
         you are dead, seek resurrection.
There are many who will point to the hole to be dug,
         and hand you the shovel.
    Know yourself. Seek happiness within.
If it is not there, then you are a curmudgeon.
    Find your peace in this,
And let others find their peace for themselves.
