The Moody Blues "Gemini Dream"

Though they had come to fame in the US as part of the British Invasion that swept onto the music charts and radio of the mid-'60s, for the latter half of the '70s, The Moody Blues had seen their audience decline, especially in the wake of disco and punk. When the released their 1981 album, Long Distance Voyager, they had only had one minor hit - "Steppin' In A Slide Zone" which hit #39 in 1978 - in the previous eight years.

Surprisingly, Long Distance Voyager was a smash, becoming the band's second #1 on the album charts, having previously done so in 1972 with Seventh Sojourn. In fact, The Moody Blues hadn't had a Top Ten album in the States since Seventh Sojourn. Driving the album's unexpected success was the first single, "Gemini Dream."

With it's manic, exuberant keyboard riff and Justin Hayward's smooth vocals, "Gemini Dream" was popular with rock fans who had grown up with the band as well as newer fans and listeners at soft rock radio. The song became The Moody Blues' ninth US Top 40 hit in June and saturated the airwaves all summer long. It would spend ten weeks in the Top 40, peaking at #12 for a week in August and re-establishing The Moody Blues who would have an equally successful hit with the followup single, "The Voice."
