The Democrats are against the War in Iraq? Since when?
We all remember the Lieberman attack, which was fair... but this party aspires to an identity it can never claim. You cannot take back those votes. You had a chance and plenty of time to debate and you leafrogged that and anything resembling political sanity because you simply trusted a Republican President so much that you had to give him the ability to overcome checks and balances on this one?
Kerry cannot say he made a mistake so he attacks the war in Iraq but when asked says "I still would have done it, only differently."
Well if that is the case, why not keep the man who gave birth to the concept as President?
That is why they lost the election last year and that is why they continue to lose on this issue. They cannot cash in the chips now. They all voted for it save a handful. The vast majority of the party voted for the Iraq Resolution with little resembling actual debate. If they wanted our respect they should have figured out this was not a good idea before it was initiated-not ride the coattails of anti war sentiment after the fact!
They had the ability and the responsibility to keep this administration in check and they voted it away. This administration is the least balanced in American history and all of that can be traced back to Congress ceeding away its power in numerous votes after 9/11. They all chose to appear to operate in solidarity instead of actually thinking things through. They in fact acted as Bush acts constantly, with no thought beforehand. That is why so many of them argue against the results of their votes, because true thought has only been given to the matter once results became manifest. That these men who run our country did not have the foresight to think ahead to simple consequences of extreme actions is very troubling indeed. Why do all the truly talented among us avoid politics like the plague and leave the chaff to run our great country?
They act as if it is shocking that Bush would use the power to go to war with Iraq! Well why do you think he was asking for it? Did you pay any mind to the rhetoric he was using to sell us on Saddam at the time, how extreme and uncompromising it was already? Our Congress had a chance to slow things down and engage in debate but instead rode the tide of patriotic sentiment in hopes of gaining political currency. This failure to overcome emotion and engage in logical discourse will always resonate with me as one of the dark moments in our political history, at least of the parts I was here for. They could have just as easily waited with the promise of passing a resolution after the facts came in. Why would a US resolution convince other countries to join us in a war they did not believe in? Why would that one thing convince them? Did they even ask these questions as this bill that would grant Bush all authority to decide Iraq's fate swept through the branch?
The moment that vote went through we were only an invasion date away from being at War and every intelligent person who followed the procedings was aware of this. Until you see the evidence yourself you should not believe and to blindly believe anything the President says concerning such evidence, it defeats the purpose of checks and balances. You should never vote for a president to have the ability to overcome Congressional approval and go to war until you are sure you support the war yourself. By their votes, almost all of them did.
They can play their little game of semantics to avoid blame but we all know the truth. Democrats should realize by now that we as a people are concerned not with the strategies of how this war is being fought but the principle of us going over there at all. That we went over there to kill and die over a premise of lies. WMDs? None. This war as part of a consistent, lucid foreign policy? The day the moon disappers. Greeted as liberators? How does one greet a liberator, with a cake? Well how about a cake with a bomb in it?
This game they are playing shows how pathetic the nature of politics is these days. They speak ferociously against this war, as they should, yet avoid personal accountability over the fact that they voted to support it. Their votes empowered the president to go through with his worst of plans so therefore they are nearly as much to blame as he is! Their hypocrisy in this situation is truly stunning. The polar nature of partisanship means that the Anti-War sentiment must seep in somewhere and since it reflects best off the Republican's support it has been adopted by the Democratic party. This shows how partisan politics are screwing reality up once again, but the Democrats do not get this one. People are not that stupid. Both parties failed but the Democrats passionatly lay claim to being the party that failed less. Yet they had their vote, allowed themselves to be duped, most likely to take advantage of the political climate, and now they make their second attempt. No sale.
Is this how history is going to be? Just the story of one mistake after another? If a leader cannot admit they were wrong, how do we know they won't make the same mistake again? Knowing now that feigning perfection compounds problems when a mistake is made, and that all humans make mistakes, why would we even want such types to lead us?
