The Memoirs of a Girl Raised in Alaska
I am very new at blogging, but since my blog is entitled "Girl Raised in Alaska", I figured I'd write some of my Alaskan adventures.
My family, which includes my mom, dad, and sister all moved to Alaska in the year 1976. I was 3 years old and my sister 5 yrs old.
We are Christians and my parents had spent 2 years prior to our move in South America, where I was born. They are missionaries, and I guess "once a missionary always a missionary".
Having moved back to the United States my parents decided they wanted to raise their daughters in a more secluded environment. So off we went to the frozen North in our green VW Van. Boy that's the 70's right?
The trip took us up through Canada on the Alcan Hwy, which was not more than a dirt road. Thankfully seat belts were not required then, because my sister and I spent many, many hours playing in the back of that van.
Our destination was in the middle of the interior. The closest town was 45 miles away, and it was called a town because it happened to have a gas station there and one or two other little building there. The important thing about this town, Delta Junction, was that it was were the Alcan Hwy ended. Today, the town is booming because of the growth of the nearby Army Base Fort Greely
After traveling over two weeks in May we arrived at our destination. When we turned off the Alcan Hwy we then drove on a muddy dirt road which led us back into the foothills of the Alaska Range. The view was magnificent! We were finally there! Thankfully we were only about 100 yards from our new home when the faithful VW Van decided to get thoroughly stuck in the mud. We walked the rest of the way in.
Tune in soon to find out where we lived during the summer of 1976.
