THE IMMUTABLE SPIRIT

Never fear the darkness. Believe that whatever the darkness holds is more afraid of you. You are bigger and stronger than anything that would hide itself from the light. The things that slither and create contempt and fear wither and die under your will. Gather around you those who love you and create a force too strong to be shaken. Never, never give in to the illusion of fear and weakness. Underneath the armor you wear is even more armor. When your strength is depleted, you’ll find that you can still stand and fight some more.

Stand and fight. Fight for your life. Fight for your freedom. Fight for the world. I’ll be standing right beside you.

Timing is everything Spooky!!!

Very good and perfect timing. You know that little issue of the Holiday stamp is going around and I'm fighting that battle on several fronts. It appears that the Kool-Aid distributers have cranked up their rhetoric around hating all Muslims. They are doing their damndest to convince America that all Muslim people are terrorists. Much the same as they are trying to convince us that all Mexican people are illegals and all Christians are fabulous, even the ones protesting our dead soldiers funerals. This stamp is being used to stir the pot. What people don't understand is this stamp is exactly what being an American is all about; Freedom. Every time we protest others freedoms and try to limit their rights we are trampling on our own. Soon I expect that the USPS will decide that there will be no further Holiday stamps representative of any religion. Maybe then they will get it? I doubt it; they will just rant about how they are being singled out and how there is a war against god right! Thanks for the encouragement once again.

KOOL-AID??????

Oh my damn, AR! I've boycotted a lot of things over the years - hell, I still haven't bought any Cracker Barrel products weather they changed their anti-gay hiring policy or not! But, Kool-aid is now aiding the effort to discriminate????
But, really, I kinda missed the stamp discussion (I kept the page open to read off line and then lost it!) What are you doing and how can I help?

You do remember Jimmy Jones right?

Jimmy Jones is the nut cracker that was a Evangelical that took that group of people to the mountains and had a camp that was fenced in and he kept them there like sheep. He eventually gave them poisoned Kool-Aid and killed all of them and himself.

I think it was in the 70's. Thus the reference to Kool-Aid.

Uhhh, not quite accurate,...

Jim Jones took his followers to Ghana, and when they were being investigated by some politicos from Washington killed them in an ambush, then had everyone drink the poisoned Kool Aid. They were known as the People's Temple, and it wasn't in any mountains. As a matter of fact, in 8 days it'll be the 30th anniversary of the event, so it'll probably be on the news.

Still not quite accurate, but close. :)

They went to Guyana, which is in South America, rather than Ghana, in Africa. It was a REALLY secluded area, and pretty much the only way in or out was by the trucks that the People's Temple controlled.

Also, most people believe that everyone happily drank the Kool-Aid, but there were a fair number who were shot, including Jones himself. It's speculated that he saw the way the others were dying and didn't want it to happen to him, so he had someone shoot him. This came after a group from Washington (and some concerned family members) came to see how the people there were being treated. Jones didn't want them there in the first place and grew increasingly paranoid during their visit. After taking them back to an airstrip, he sent along some of his loyal followers that were posing as people who wanted to leave the People's Temple. They shot and killed a congressman and some people from NBC.

I just watched a show about this last weekend, and the thing that stuck with me is the Jones's son was one of the few who was not killed during the murder-suicide. I can't even imagine spending the rest of my life being associated with someone like that. You want to get married and your in-laws wonder if you're as insane as your father, or you try and find work, but people find out who your father is. So difficult.

Man, typed the wrong country,...

and I ever knew that, kept looking at it in my mind, and still typed Ghana; ugh! And you're right about the other stuff, how some people didn't want to drink it, but I didn't want to go into that much more detail right now. Thing is, Jim Jones, for awhile, was thought to be a good guy; how fast things change when one starts believing they're God.

ya, it gets scarier!

I was a tiny kid when it all went down, so my belief had always been that everyone who died did so willingly. It wasn't until many years later that I learned of the folks who tried to escape the punch of death and who were shot as they tried to flee! Imagine coming to your senses about something like that, only to be killed anyway!

Yeah,

it was supposed to be a paradise where everyone could live freely, and all people made contributions to their society. Somebody forgot to tell them that communism (and it was in essence a commune) is nearly impossible on more than the smallest of scales. Add into it a God complex, and you've got a real mess.

I worked on a cable show

that was all about astrology and they had this one guest who talked about facial features being a "tell" about their mindset. To this day I look at people with close set eyes and large ears and try to see if they are, in fact, cult material!
When I was young I nearly came to live on a commune. I wanted to do it big time! I was a kid! Hey, the idea of this wilderness playground where our school would be the other moms seemed cool. My mother - who was so damned set on living in reality - nixed it and soon after the whole thing fell apart. I guess it goes to show that the only real paradise we create can only come from working with our reality and changing things that way. Hiding from the world never works out!

Thanks for the correction and details

I didn't remember all the details. It was such a wierd thing at the time. Funny how many people we have drinking the Kool-Aid these days!

opps, misread that!

Ok, so I got the Auntie Mame reference, but misread that one! Well, a funny aside - when my mother remarried she married someone with a reverend in his family. He, of course, did the ceremony. His name : Jim Jones! It was the joke of the month! Everyone attending asked the same question ~ "Will there be punch?"

Ok, and making it FUNNIER

is the fact that her new husband and his whole clan were Mormon! Had I known then what I know now, it would have made for one hell of a weekend!
