The Great Closet Spring Cleaning

ModelMom's picture

I have been putting off doing a major closet and drawer overhaul in my house for about 4 months now. I really can't stand how messy everything is and just really want to get down and dirty and just clean out all of our closets, get rid of stuff we don't use anymore and have good closet feng shui....but I can't seem to find the energy to!

My house always looks clean & organized, chalk it up to my neurosis...but the closets and the garage are an unholy mess. I do hang stuff up (my hubby, not so much) and fold things but the folded stuff always ends up in a pile that topples over, my shoes are mismatched and my underwear is a pathetic tangle.

In my son's closet, things are better but I have so much of his old, and outgrown clothes that I need to organize and/or get rid of, as well as toys that he no longer plays with that need to be stashed away for a potential future sibling. So much to do! And don't get me started on the clost underneath the stairs, the garage and my kitchen's two junk drawers.

I am giving myself until the middle of next month to get this taken care of...and then I'll whisk away all the stuff we haven't used in ages to Goodwill or ebay, although ebay hasn't been producing good revenue for me the last few times I've put stuff up for auction there.

But I do know that it'll feel better once I do this....and I do believe in the old addage that clearing out the old makes room for newer and better things. I just need the energy and motivation! At the end of each toddler chasing filled day I am too pooped to undertake my closet clearing expedition.....but I gotta.......hmmm, maybe I can find a way to trick my husband into doing it for me......

Feel free to use this trick.

Feel free to use this trick. I often find there are chores I don't want to do, and when I look at the big picture, it gets overwhelming. I personally use Hotmail calendar for this, but any kind of calender that allows you to schedule meetings will work.

Say I need to sort clothes and hang up the ones that need to be hung up, and sort the rest into piles for garage sale, donate, and out of season. I will schedule my day in blocks of 30 minutes. For each 30 minute block, I have a certain number of clothes I decide that I must pick up. Let's say that I have to sort 20 articles of clothing. This will take me about 2 minutes, and I find that I usually keep going so that I can mark it as done. Once the piles are sorted, the next thing on the list would be to hang up 20. Then after that, box and take the out of season to the attic. Next I would set aside the garage sell clothes in a box. And finally I would box and drop off the clothes to be donated. This way, I have managed to finish a daunting chore, and gotten it done in just a few minutes, and I have the rest of the day to enjoy.

I have used this method while my husband was on vacation one week, and in that time we cleaned, painted our house, painted our building, removed most of the floor on half of our building, built a closet, etc. We did several big chores where there was really only time for one.

But if you want to be like them, you'll have to emulate. -Ayria

There's just so much of it...
At least now we know that the second (and last) baby will be a girl, so I'm getting read to pass along various little boy clothes to people who need them. I just have to find the time...

Try the Shettles method

We tried the Shettles method since we very much wanted a girl this time. We were careful about the timing and conceived in one month's time with only two tries that month (you have to be careful with how many times you try and when with this method). Maybe it was a coincidence, but I would definitely do it again. We only followed some of the recommendations, not all of them (some of them are kind of restrictive).

Actually, regarding the clothes, I'm not much of a girly girl and I've become so conditioned to look at boys' clothes now that I'm having a hard time getting into the girl outfits. My mom's bought the baby several things though :)

I can't believe how lucky I am that the baby seems to have escaped having a serious health problem AND is a girl. How great is that????

It's so cute to hear my son talk about his sister!!!!!

Thanks!

I was concerned because I am older - 34 (soon to be 35, ugh) and my family was all like - "You had better get started, it's going to take you forever." And really, I didn't want to be delivering in November because there is a huge dog event then that I flew to AZ to cover last year and I thought I might get asked to do it again (I would have been asked, it turns out). It was an awesome experience. But, alas, my daughter is due on like the day the event begins. Sigh.

I can't complain though, and I've assured them that this will be my last pregnancy and I will attend every event in the future. I just hope that whoever does the coverage isn't as good as I am, so the job will be mine again when I want it.
