The Fixx "Saved By Zero"

With their 1982 debut Shuttered Room, British quintet The Fixx made a name for themselves with new wave fans in the US, benefiting from support for their videos on MTV, with their stylish and slightly headier brand of synth-rock. Although the album wasn't a major commercial success, the group did manage to crack the Hot 100 singles chart with "Stand Or Fall" and always received airplay with the song "Red Skies."

Their follow-up album, Reach The Beach, arrived the following summer. Like its predecessor, The Fixx gave a rock edge to their dance-tinged synthesized pop and it was rock audiences that helped the album's first single, "Saved By Zero," onto the charts. The lyrics might be a bit vague, but "Saved By Zero" was heavy on atmosphere - a moody, brooding track with a menacing dreamy feel added to by lead singer Cy Curnin's disaffected vocals.

Once again, MTV gave heavy airplay to the song's video and, in July, The Fixx notched their first major smash as "Saved By Zero" broke into the US Top 40. The song spent the next two months within that portion of the pop singles chart, peaking at #20 for a week in late August. "Saved By Zero" was even a bigger hit on the album rock charts, climbing into the Top Ten and setting the stage for even greater success with Reach The Beach's second single, "One Thing Leads To Another."
