The Die Hard Guy Is Running For President

Die Hard | elections | movies | politics | presidents | senators | television

On Monday night, former Senator Fred Thompson announced on the Jay Leno Show that he's a candidate for president of the United States. Not that I'm voting for him anyway, but, if the Republican party needed something to make them interesting in this upcoming political season they got it.

As I was watching Monday night, Thompson reminded me more of the head of the airport in Die Hard II, as well as the D.A. from Law and Order, than any true candidate for president. There's just nothing boring about this guy. Even though he took on some of the same causes that make most of the other Republicans unpopular right now (he's for keeping troops in Iraq), he has this folksy way of saying things, including some of the little Southern quips he comes up with, that just makes him really entertaining.

And that's a little scary for someone like me, who's really hoping for a major change in political parties in this upcoming presidential election, because, well, when it's boring, you just stick with your favorite candidate and move on. When someone comes across as particularly charismatic in some way,... well, Bill Clinton did beat an incumbent president for the first time in almost 100 years after all, probably more for his charm than anything else.

And get this; Thompson also stated he's not sure he'll participate in any of the debates because he doesn't believe the way they're run is in anyone's best interest; well, when everyone's agreeing on the same thing (except for this guy Paul from Texas), I guess there wouldn't be much to debate about.

Politics might have just gotten entertaining; not sure how I feel about that.

Well Catfish This is

another good call for ya'. I enjoy watching the guy on the boob tube, and the way he portrays his character on "Law and Order". America did elect one former actor president already ,so the "Big Role" is open to casting call.

When you think about it 99.9% of the job of President is acting of a sort, and reading scripts(speeches written by other folks)and not prepared by themselves...hey... now that I think about it he might just be prime time material(not that I intend to vote for him at this point either), but he does meet all the criteria needed. Avoiding those debates has already been a very smart move on his part, and not going along with the main stream "Repubs" on every single issue makes him all the more qualified (I think)...so time will surely tell won't it. :)

He doesn't really stand a chance

do you think? I dont think he will come close to getting more votes. People do like him as a senator, but more as an actor. 2catdave is right about him being a pro already at reading scripts and acting. I personally I wouldn't vote for him because he is for leaving the troops in Iraq. He will make it entertaining. I have noticed that every election, there is always someone that tends to make it interesting or entertaining, but are never actually voted for or don't get many votes.

Here's the thing, Ammorton,...

What gets people juiced is if someone has the gift of communication. Thompson, as an actor, would be a much better communicator than most of the other candidates combined. Not only that, but before he joined the race he was second in popularity already in polls, just behind Guiliani. Could it happen; sure could.

Yea--never say never in this game

with politics anything can happen. I just don't see people at this point really considering him, but hey, wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, and wont be the last I'm sure, lol.

True Ammorton,...

by the middle of February, we should know for sure. Truthfully, though, he just might be the alternative the Republicans were looking for. Out of all the Republicans, Guiliani is the only person I'd support, and that's scary. The Democrats are already a two-person race.

By the way, Ammorton,...

a poll came out today saying Thompson is only one point behind Guiliani; there you go!

Wow- I guess I have to say your right on that

Catfish. So people would vote him in-ok. I dont know a whole lot of Guiliani, except that he stepped up during the 9/11 ordeal. I know people like him alot, but have not followed him on this political race.
