The dangers of blood clots

The medical community is starting to stand up and take notice of the seriousness of blood clots. They are also starting to realize that blood clots can strike any person at anytime.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) refers to a blood clot embedded in one of the major deep veins of the lower legs, thighs, or pelvis. When you have a blood clot in one of these areas, it prevents the blood from circulating back up to your heart. A blood clot can cause pain, swelling, or warmth in the area that it's in. It can also cause pain that worsens when you bend your foot, leg cramps, and a bluish or white discoloration of the skin.

In the USA alone, about 2 MILLION people per year develop DVT. 2 MILLION! At least 200,000 per year die from blood clots in their lungs.

Blood clots in the veins can cause inflammation called thrombophlebitis.

The most worrisome complications of DVT occur when a clot breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream and causes blockage of blood vessels (pulmonary arteries) in the lung. Blood clots are nothing to mess with.

If you even have a distant thought that you might have a blood clot, don't take the chance. See a medical professional asap. It's better safe than sorry.
