The American Dream

life

What is the American Dream? I've always heard people talking about living the Amercian Dream, but I've never been quite sure what they're talking about. I guess for starters you should have a happy marriage. That's good...I have that. Then I guess you should have atleast a kid or two, maybe three. I'm not planning to have any of those for a while. The next thing I guess would be financial stability. I don't quite have that yet. So do these three things really make up the American Dream? What about the people who claim to be living the American Dream, but yet they have an unhappy marriage filled with infidelities. They have kids and they have money, but the rest is just a big show. They laugh and smile in public then they fight and yell at home after the kids have gone to bed. If this it what they call the American Dream then I don't want it. I'm quite happy with my faithful hard working husband and my little house. The bills are more than the paycheck, but we're happy. In my opinion that should be the American Dream.

The American Dream

Has absolutely nothing to do with specifics like being married or having kids. The American Dream is about being able to improve your lot in life. For an illegal alien running across the border from Mexico it is being able to work for US minimum wage and send money home to the family. For a kid who's parents slaved every day of their lives to be able to put him through college it's the ability to come from that less than wealthy background and become a doctor or lawyer. For an upper-middle class college drop-out it's the ability to start your own business and become the richest man in the world. For a woman from India the American Dream might be to be able to choose her husband rather than marry the man whose family she was sold to before she could walk. For a woman from Iran it might be the opportunity to escape religious oppresion and get an education. For a man from Thailand it might be the opportunity to open a restaurant and put his entire family to work. The American Dream can be anything.
