Taking Hollywood By Storm!........er, or at least Downtown adjacent

Well folks, yours truly and the Princess of Darkness arrived at the Los Angeles Greyhound terminal at 6:10am Wens morning (April 23rd) and are happily getting settled in! The ride out was seriously uneventful and not even as uncomfortable as the bus usually is. There were no crazies, no loud assholes or even anyone with their seat in my lap. Donnella fell asleep within 15 minutes of our 11:00pm departure and slept until we got here. I think somewhere out there that means a world record was broken.

After picking up a cup of coffee and giving Nella her packed breakfast, I grabbed a shiny, new copy of the Los Angeles Times, found an ad for a cheap weekly hotel, jumped in a cab and got us a room. I won’t lie to ya ~ at first glance the place is kinda scary. It’s one of those super old buildings that was awesome back in the day, but now is retrofitted with thick bars and a giant, black cage over the inside staircase. Hell, there was even a notice on the front door that a scene from ‘CSI’ was to be filmed that day between 5pm - 4am. So, I guess everyone else thinks of this area as one where crime is just expected to happen. And, no ~ I saw no actors! {sigh}

But, scary looking or not, the place is pretty quiet (with a couple of late night exceptions!) and everyone so far has been really nice and helpful. The only thing I don’t like about the place is that we’re not allowed to do any sort of cooking here, so no microwaves or even mini refrigorators are allowed. But, this is temporary. There’s also no TV. That’s something I don’t care too much about really ~ I *had* been looking forward to reading the books I recently bought, after all. But, I was concerned about the weight of the things we brought and left them at my brother’s apartment! But, that just means I’ll be WRITING at night like I should be anyway! Besides, I already have a new library card and checked out the book ‘Left Behind’. I was looking for Stephen Kings ‘Cell’, but they need to order it for me. {Grumble - I always find the libraries without the books I want!} I’m really not one for books with religious overtones, but I’m intrigued by this one. Let’s face it, me NOT being intrigued by an “end of days” premise is as unlikely as Quentin Tarantino NOT using the F-word!

Oh, and did I mention writing??? Well, my darling daughter has actually inspired what I wrote over Mother’s Day weekend. It’s a tv show and, while I can’t go into detail about it now, I’m seriously jazzed about it! Not only did I bang out the pilot over that two days, but outlined 12 other episodes. Ya, I know that’s not how it “works” but it’s really writing itself. So, why not go with it??? I’ve also been working on my other projects ~ you know, the actual films! And, though I’m about to have much less time (yay! Two jobs on the horizon!!!!) I’ve still gotten enough done on everything that I’m not too worried. What I *really* need to worry about is finding time to just hang out with the kid! I don’t plan on working two jobs for too long, but you know how that goes ~ getting settled, getting on your feet, putting money away ~ all that jazz usually takes longer than ever *planned*.

Truthfully ~ it’s not a bad place to start out and there’s plenty of really cheap places to eat and buy food. There’s also an enormous park with a man made pond/lake with paddle boats right around the corner from here. If I really didn’t need to rent that super cheap apartment downtown, I might think about hanging out in this ‘hood awhile longer. But, who knows, I might find something. Oh, and if I walk down to the end of our hallway and look out the window, I can see the Hollywood sign clear as day. Huh, I wonder how long it will be before I take that for granted like everyone else who lives here. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven’t looked out that window since we got here.

So, we’re here at last and so far things are going quite well! Nella is even using the potty!!!!!! Woo-hoo! I mean, of all the LA horror stories I’ve heard, ours I guess, could be considered a fairy tale! Things aren’t perfect, not by a long shot, but they’re good. We’re having fun, meeting people, and trying to take in as much as we can. One thing’s for sure ~ there is never a lack of things to do in Los Angeles! If I can swing it, I’ll be taking the kid to her very first Marionette show this weekend and for me {oh please! please!} a screening of ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’!

But, at the very least ~ I’ll be writing. ;-)

How Wild, Spooky,...

course, I know it all means you're eating out all the time, but you didn't say whether you had internet access or if you had to go to the library for it like ammorton had to do for awhile. Glad you're finally where you wanted to be, kiddo.

both, catfish

Right now I'm at the library and I'll use their wireless when I can. But, the rest of the time I'm at Burger King using theirs! It's only around the corner from our room, so a bit more practical at times.

It's good to be here! Though, I'm beat from pounding the pavement! Hopefully I'll have some work through the temp agency soon - like Monday! LOL

Pulling for you, Spooky,...

but I'd thought you already had something before you left.

I had something, Catfish

I had something lined up, but not set. It's really been a pain trying to rent that apartment, so I'm looking into others now.

Spooky, I don't only mean,...

the apartment. I thought you'd lined up employment before you left also. Or was that one you missed because of timing?

Oh, I get it, Catfish!

I had some catering companies bookmarked, but decided the "safe" route would be something with guaranteed hours. In catering you only work if they have parties scheduled. Most of the time that works out ok, but it can take a minute to learn who the better companies are to work for, too.
Of course, now that I have the full time gig, I'm looking for catering gigs to replace it with! The hours are ok, but the commute is ridiculous and ends up tacking so much time onto my day that I can't get anything else done. But, I'll hang in with it for now!

Okay Spooky,...

long as you have money coming in, that means opportunities are just around the corner. And you had mentioned that there were a lot of catering companies also, so there you go.

Yay Spooky.....You Made It

I am so glad you are finally in LA. I know you have been trying forever to get there, and look, there you are.
I am sure you will find tons of stuff for you and Nella to do. Can't wait to hear about all of it. Especially if you meet famous people...for me thats what LA probably stands for.
Hope your writing goes great and you find some time to still drop in here and of course, first off, spending time with the little doll face.
Kudos to ya....you've worked hard to get there.

spookyyank's picture

It sure did, ammorton!

It sure did take forever to get here! But, we're here now and having a pretty good time. Don't know if we'll meet any famous people, but it's really possible since we seem to pass by location sets all the time! LOL So far I've only seen extra's, but ya never know.

I'm kinda taking tomorrow off - Nella has an evaluation for special programs at 9:30am and her new babysitter has a graduation thing with her daughter at 5:00pm. So, since she ALSO needs to get in to see the dentist and I have no clue how long the evaluation thing will take - I'll probably just keep her with me; rather than rushing her across town and then picking her up early!

I'll be sure to post what we do. I am just feeling silly for that other post - the premature one - when it's NOW that I'm not around much at all! I just wish I could even keep up with reading everyone's posts! I *do* miss that!

You actually made it...good for you! Now the question remains..do you like it?

Here's what I *don't* like, Sassy

The HEAT. The heatwave that srung up suddenly that I must walk in and pound the pavement in! I also don't like how the temp agency is not working fast enough to fit my schedule! But, otherwise, I'm really digging it!

STALKING EDGAR ON MYSPACE

Yep Spooky I have been there!

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

I know it's hot as hell there, but at least it's dry heat and low humidity, unlike here in GA. where it's hot as hell and despite a nice cool shower, once outside for any amount of time and it's time to take yet another shower!

spookyyank's picture

Ya, Sassy!

That heatwave was horrible and thankfully not common for even this area. Of course, that doesn't mean that at the end of the day I'm not stinky! It's all the walking from place to place that's doing it. But, at least it's excercise, right?? LOL

Energised

What? Have you been eating batteries or somethin'? You sound so full of energy. There's nothing like arriving in a place you've always dreamed of to make you sparky. Excellent stuff Spooky.

And I agree with Sassys, dry heat is better than wet heat and with all the static electricity around you could walk up to one of your favourite movie stars and do one of those scenes we used to see in old movies, where a man and woman shake hands and a spark flies between them and ZAPPO! They're in luv.

Xingtioa!

How great to hear from you! I hope things are going well for you, too! Yes, I am pretty energized! At first it was only getting here and moving forward, but since arriving I've been really shocked at how much I'm really liking it! I expected to just make the best of it and never dreamed I'd actually enjoy living in this city I've never really liked. But, it's been an enormous source of inspiration and good vibes.
Er, well besides the little boy who keeps hitting on me and leering at me! He lives in the building and seems to be outside everytime we come or go. He looks like he's about 19 years old and a total player who makes my skin crawl. I'm sure he's harmless, but he's also inspiring me to plant my foot somewhere he won't like! That little bit isn't so cool!

So, so far no Hollywood-esque romance yet! Here's to hoping! And, hoping for you, too!
