American and Canadian researchers have found that hospitals that practice drug and device studies could be better at dealing with life-threatening situations and they have lower patient death rates than hospitals that don’t do clinical trials. There was another study done that found that ovarian cancer patients at these types of hospitals have a 28 percent lower mortality rate.

With all the talk about plagiarism around here lately, it seemed all too appropriate that the judge's ruling for The Da Vinci Code copyright infringement trial would be announced today. High Court judge Peter Smith concluded that Dan Brown did not steal his ideas for his bestselling novel from Holy Blood, Holy Grail (or The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, the international title) as Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh (two of the book's three authors) had claimed. (For those who are not familiar with the trial, this blog covers the initial details.) Does this really surprise anyone?

Da Vinci Code Rivalry?

Dan Brown clearly has a courtroom rival in Michael Baigent, one of the authors involved in The Da Vinci Code copyright infringement case. However, this rivalry may very well extend to the extend to bestseller lists.

Today, Da Vinci Code hit the shelves in paperback with an advance printing of 5 million copies. Also released today was Baigent's follow up to Holy Blood, Holy Grail entitled The Jesus Papers: Exposing the Greatest Cover-Up in History. As with his previous work, he supposes that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and sired a child, and he further speculates that Jesus did not die on the cross, supporting "theories" based on documents he has yet to track down. With or without these documents, his book will no doubt find conspiracy theorists and religious skeptics.
