Scientists believe stem cells, unspecified cells that will eventually mature into specialized cells (brain cells, liver cells, etc), can lead to a medical revolution. Stem cells have the ability to regenerate cells and tissues, offering possible treatment for numerous diseases. Stem cells have two main varieties, adult and embryonic. Adult stem cells are derived from human tissues like bone marrow, skin, and placenta. Embryonic stem cells are derived from human embryos. Scientists prefer embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells because embryonic stem cells are more versatile. Although some may argue that embryonic stem cell research is unethical,

Bush vetoed legislation calling for increased Federal funding for stem cell research. Or perhaps you don’t know. It’s been tough for anything to get attention these last few days that isn’t the howl of a rocket. Or of a jet with a Star of David painted on it. Or of a blogger who is still surprised that Google AdSense hasn’t yet made the payments on the family yacht. Anyway, BigBadJohnny found himself in agreement with the veto, siding with those who consider research on embryonic stem cells “an insult to God, and he asked me what I thought about it. Here’s my answer.

What Stemmed The Stem Cell Debate?
Because harvesting stem cells destroys the embryo, this medical research has become entangled in the abortion debate. Research opponents say it is wrong because it destroys human life. Supporters say the embryos were going to be destroyed anyway, and that research from their cells holds the potential to cure debilitating diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. BUT Creating embryos intended only for research raises new questions about the ethics of stem cell science.

Stem Cells
Stem cells are the building blocks of our tissues, blood, and immune system. Unlike other cells in the body, stem cells have the capacity for self-renewal and are capable of forming many specialized cell types, such as muscle cells, red blood cells or brain cells.
