When my laptop died unexpectedly a few months ago, I was able to borrow my husband's tablet for a few days. This was great in some ways, except that I couldn't get the screen calibrated exactly right for me.

This meant that instead of being able to use the stylus, I used my fingers and it functioned as a sort of touch screen computer.

I liked the idea of that but then I thought, where would I go for touch screen repair if that one stopped working as well? Luckily, I never had to face that awful thought, as my old computer was soon repaired.

Vacation On The Beach

I'm a great fan of beach holidays. All that sand and sea air is positively addictive. I like walking along the beach, looking for shells, swimming, building sand castles with my daughter. I love picnics on the beach – as long as I can keep the sand out of my sandwiches.

If you're going to have a beach holiday then you need somewhere to stay. In North Carolina you could go for Outer Banks vacation rentals. Then, when you've had enough of the beach you could visit Kitty Hawk and other famous locations. In fact, you could even stay there – in the same place as that historic first flight. Mindblowing, isn't it?

Maybe I'm Irish

I've been editing a joke book and there are a lot of Irish jokes in there. Some of them are tasteless and others hilarious, but it made me think about the fact of Irishness – and the way people who have been out of the country for several generations still think of themselves as Irish. They buy Irish gifts for St Patrick's Day, drink in Irish bars – the whole works.

Looking After Your Mail

In England, most people don't have mailboxes, at least, not where I lived. It's true. What they have instead is an ingenious little flap that allows the postman to push the mail in so it can't come out again. Typically, your mail lies on the mat until you pick it up. But when we moved away from England, we had to get a mailbox, because mailboxes are what they have in many other places in the world.

Get Sharp With HDMI

If you want your picture crisp and sharp with all the digital info, then you probably need some HDMI cable. Me, I need a better TV.

After years of widescreen, I now have a TV with a traditional ratio and tradition sound (ugh!). It's better than no TV but I'm missing my crisp digital sound. There are no cables to connect it to my hifi and only a few ports for other things.

Where do you go for business card printing? Do you remember the early days of PCs when lots of people got inkjet printers and bits of software and designed their own? That was fun, but there was no way that most of those matched up to professional printing standards? I'm not criticizing – I tried it myself, and there was a world of difference between the quality from my home printer and the ones that I got from work.

If you want to see somewhere with a history that is interwoven through British history and culture, then that is one place you should choose. The oldest building, the Saxon Tower of St Michael at the North Gate which overlooks the city, dates back to the 11th century.

When She's Old Enough

Orlando condos, anyone? I'm still fascinated by the place and slowly but surely is approaching the magic age when she's old enough for the full-on Disney experience.

She's not ready yet. A life sized Mickey Mouse in last year's Christmas parade scared the pants off her.

But one day we will be able to explore Orlando, condos, Disney and all.

Playing Doctors

My daughter went through a phase a few months ago of pretending to be in the medical profession. On any given day she would be a doctor, a dentist or a nurse. You wouldn't believe the things we have used as stethoscopes – every thing from burst balloons to skipping ropes.

Where it gets really scary is when she tries to stick a pencil down my throat and says 'say ah'. I love playing games, but that requires quite some trust, especially when the three year old in question has both an enquiring mind and an unsteady hand.

One of my relatives has two business cards. She has one for her very successful silk flower arranging business, with a suitable floral theme. Then she has another for her reiki teaching business, with a nice shower of light.

I think it's important to choose business cards that are right for your business. The last ones I had were designed with a clock motif, which I hoped hinted that I was good at meeting deadlines. However, I've moved since then and I need to get some new ones. I don't know what I should choose. I could go for the same again – or perhaps choose something plain and professional. What are your business cards like and where did you get them?

When you're in the market for a new cell phone, how do you decide which one to get. Sometimes it's all about the carrier. I know my sister and brother in law got Verizon cell phones because they were offering a model that they wanted.

Phones come with some great features these days. Many of the Verizon cell phones have cameras, or take video or do the lot, becoming true multimedia phones. One of my students used a cell phone to do a video project for school - now, that's progress!

Do you ever wish you could clone yourself? Think about it. No one knows the way you operate quite like you do. You could accomplish tasks in half the time and you wouldn't have to waste time explaining things to someone else. For once, you could understand the way another person thinks - and be sure you knew what was going on in their heads.

Of course, that's just a fantasy. Since I can't have a clone, it might be worth trying a metabolism booster.

Moving Up To A Big Bed

My daughter is four, but she's a big four. She is 3 feet 8 inches tall. This kind of height runs in the family. My grandad was 6 foot 4 and my mum is also quite tall, so it's no surprise.

What it means, though, is that her bed, which converted from her cot, and should have lasted for at least another year, needs to be replaced. She can almost stretch from end to end and the slats underneath are bending (though that is probably because she stands up in the middle of it).
