When Children Start Punishing Themselves.

The other day, I was sitting in my living room, checking my e-mail on my lap top. My eldest daughter was asleep, but my youngest was still running a muck.

As I was sifting through pages of unread e-mail, I heard something that I didn't think I should be hearing, but couldn't quite identify. It was at that precise moment that I further realized that I didn't hear my youngest daughter's very loud, "indoor voices are against my religion", singing, screaming, or random noise-making.

Not The First Black After All

black | blessing | Canaan | curse | Ham | Noah | Punishment

Many report Ham as being the first black, but read Genesis 9:25-27 carefully and you will see two major holes in this claim. First, it is Canaan, not Ham, that Noah curses. Second, he is cursed to be his brothers’ servant. Nowhere is skin color mentioned as a part of this punishment. The identity of the first black remains a mystery.

Friend Of The Grape

Alcoholic | Canaan | curse | drunk | friend | grape | Ham | Noah | Punishment

French call drunkards “A friend of the grape. Charming isn’t it? Sounds so much more pleasant than drunk or alcoholic. And who was the first “friend of the grape? Noah. Noah saved the human race, planted the first vineyard and became the first recorded instance of a human getting drunk. Which, of course, led to Ham discovering his father’s nakedness in the tent and bringing a huge curse upon his son. All because he just happened to stumble upon this “friend of the grape lying in repose in his tent.

Purple Hair As A Punishment

hair | Punishment | purple

My cousin has a little girl who is almost her spitting image. In fact, they would be identical if the child had red hair like her mother. Well, my cousin apparently tried to fix that problem. Too bad for her daughter.
I believe the little girl actually requested red hair, but I can’t be sure. Regardless, that is not what she got. She maintains her naturally brown hair, with lots of purple on top that doesn’t quite cover her natural hair color. And the highlights are a weird combination of pink, purple, and maroon, all at the same time. I really can’t describe them except to say the whole thing looks unnatural.

You Don’t Have to Spank to Have a Nice Child

My husband and I have decided that we do not wish to spank our child. While we believe in punishment, we aren’t able to rationalize spanking when we tell our child that is it not appropriate to hit other people.

At this point, our two-and-a-half-year-old son is doing pretty well, behavior-wise. I’ve certainly had some tough days (you can read about them in the pages of this blog). I imagine that spanking would be easier than the methods we have chosen (time outs, being very consistent, and so on). But so far, I’m enjoying the thoughtful, sweet child he is becoming.

Parents, Please SPANK your kids.....

Yesterday my 7 month old and I go shopping at a local grocery store. We’re on this one isal and there is this boy, probably about 5 years old, just ripping stuff off shelves and throwing it on the ground. There was cans of soup all over the isle. He’s screaming and throwing a tantrum because he wanted his mother to buy him something and she said no.
