Drummer Sheila E. was well-prepared for the success she found with the the release of the debut album in the summer of 1984. The daughter of Latin jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo, Sheila had been performing with his band since her teens. She had also recently provided vocals to the Prince song "Erotic City," which had been the b-side to his #1 hit "Let's Go Crazy" (and she would become a member of his band in 1987).

Since his debut in 1978, Prince had shown an uncanny knack musical versatility, constantly altering his sound as he explored R&B, funk, soul, dance, and rock. In 1984, he had dominated the music world and pop-culture consciousness with the soundtrack from his movie debut in "Purple Rain," which found him, and his band The Revolution, even opting for an edgier, guitar-driven sound on several tracks.

Although Prince had been a fixture on the R&B charts from his 1978 debut For You, his crossover success into the pop mainstream had been limited to his 1979 hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover," which had just missed the Top Ten, peaking at #11. It appeared that the likelihood of his fifth album, 1983's double album 1999, being his breakthrough to a wider audience seemed slim when the title song stalled at #44 on the pop charts upon its release. Then, in March of 1983, "Little Red Corvette" was pulled from the album as the second single and, as it roared up the charts, it ignited sales of the album, revving Prince's career into high gear.
