Last night, while I was supposed to be doing something constructive - sleeping would have been good - I was touring blogs. And came across this item by a 5th grade teacher from Las Vegas, who calls herself "Quilldancer". Her write is an op-ed on the state of teaching in these United States, a topic I've been guilty of writing about a few times myself. Like here, and here, and here.

When we say adult learning, of course, we want to differentiate it from children learning. In children situations adults, i.e. teachers have the knowledge and the children (leaners) do not have it. They want to have from the adult who is a trusted authority for providing knowledge. Therefore, in a classroom situation knowledge is dispensed by the teacher to the children. However, this type of learning is not even appropriate for the children of today. Children no longer get the knowledge from the teacher only.Moreover, it has been established that guiding children to discover knowledge is far better than teaching them in a classroom situation where the teacher present the knowledge for most of the time and very little time is left for activities and practice. Adults with their life experience and exposure cannot be taught in the same way. Their learning styles are different and they get motivated when they are included in decision making for the learning process.
