The Best Outfit EVER! Portland-Style
Submitted by ModelMom on January 16, 2008 - 8:18am. cold weather | fashion | faux pas | haute couture | Oregon | Portland | winterI just dropped my son off at preschool and it is a particularly chilly (the news says freezing) morning. Everyone on the street that I drove by was bundled up to their fullest capacity and clutching something warm to drink in their gloved hands. But I have to say that one person, one high school girl, in particular almost had me run my car off the road.
It's Snowing!
Submitted by ModelMom on November 28, 2006 - 12:45pm. bronchitis | Christmas cards | Oregon | Portland | snowGranted it is not sticking...yet. But this morning has brought us the season's first snow. It has been a light shower of tiny flakes all morning and so pretty to look at. this is the one thing I love about living in the Northwest....teh four seasons. growing up in LA I only had summer year round, which is great in its own right, but far from festive.
I can't wait for it to start sticking (if it decides to) so that I can take my son out to the backyard and take some pics.
Portland man arrested in MySpace.com sting

Police say Jeramie Eidem, 26, was well aware that the girl was only 12 years old when he arranged to meet her in Vancouver.
But Eidem only met sheriffs deputies at the arranged time and place, and is now under arrest on attempted rape charges.
Hungarian Mushroom Soup.....My Latest Addiction
Submitted by ModelMom on August 5, 2006 - 1:36pm. Hungarian Mushroom Soup | Oregon | Portland | soup | Three Lions BakeryOn Thursday, my husband and I miraculously acquired a babysitter for a few hours, so we went out for a walk and a cup of coffee. Since we live in a very residential area of Portland with pretty much nothing more than Wendy's and KFC to get anything to eat or drink at, we drove to the NW 23rd area, otherwise known as Knob Hill.
Right after I graduated from college I lived in Knob Hill in a beautiful little 1930's studio which at the time only cost me $500 a month. Condos in this area are now starting at $515,000 for a two bedroom....it's insane, but the area is darling full of shops, restaurants, cafes and more. I miss living there!
Bathing Suits Required!
Submitted by Jeanne Gibson on May 20, 2006 - 5:06pm. hike | McKenzie River | Oregon | resort | swimYes, Belknap Springs Resort DOES Require Guests To Wear Bathing Suits!
Several weeks ago, we spent my husband’s birthday at Belknap Hot Springs near McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. It is a gorgeous resort we try to visit several times a year.
When we informed our Pastor that we were planning to spend a few days here, his eyebrows shot up as he asked, “Are you planning to go in the water? It wasn’t until later, that we figured out his strange reaction. Oregon does have several locations along the McKenzie River where there are hot springs and where bathing suits are optional. Please be advised that Belknap Springs Resort DOES require bathing suits.
Interesting Lawn Ornaments (aka Stop Lowering My Equity!!)
Submitted by ModelMom on April 26, 2006 - 3:37pm. equity | neighbors | Oregon | Portland | real estateI really wonder what makes some people take such little pride in their homes. After taking a stroll with my son today, I just had to sit down and write about this, contemplate on it a little.....because I just don't get it.
I pass way too many houses with four or more derelict vehicles parked on their front lawns. Cars, trucks, and campers that will never again feel the joys of the road moving beneath them. Houses with weeds growing waist high and promising excellent adventures to anyone willing to go on a dandelion safari. Trash heaps, broken down toys, rusty swingsets, boxes of random crap all just tossed on front lawns....why? Broken beer bottles....what the hell? And no, I don't live in an urban distress area, just a regular middle-class neighborhood....although I'm starting to wonder about this a little now.
I am Surrounded by Registered Sex Offenders
Submitted by ModelMom on April 23, 2006 - 10:08pm. Los Angeles | megans law | Oregon | Portland | sex offendersI was just told by a friend to check out Meganslaw.com which is a website set up to let you know if there are any registered sex offenders in your area. You input your information and maps, descriptions, etc. pop up telling you where in your immediate area one of these miscreants lives.
Well, sometimes ignorance is bliss.....but I am a curious girl by nature, and I have a son who I know I am overly protective of (and with good reason, now I know) so I punchedin our information and up pops the notice that there are 66 registered sex offenders in my immediate area. 66! This is appaling and very disturbing. My husband and I moved up to Portland, Oregon to give our son a better life and to be able to buy a house, which is pretty much impossible in Los Angeles unless you are a movie star or a dope king pin. Well, wwe got the house, and it's a beautiful one at that......but as for giving our son a better quality of life? When so many predators are in our city? I'm stumped.
Zombies (aka Meth Heads) Are Taking Over My Town.
Submitted by ModelMom on April 3, 2006 - 7:44am. addictions | crystal meth | drugs | epidemics | methamphetamines | Oregon | Portland | zombiesI live in Portland, Oregon which is now being touted one of the meth capitals of the United States. Fantastic. And I honestly don't want to sound intolerant as I know that addiction is a disease and needs to be viewed and treated as such, but I just hate having to be around tweekers and hearing about their crimes on the news on a constatnt basis.
I moved up here from Los Angeles to give my son a better life, a cleaner & healthier environment to live in, yet to be honest, I see more people completely spun out of their minds walking down the streets here thatn I ever did in L.A. I originally came to Portland,to go to college, and remember it being such a wholesome and wonderful place...and it still has some great qualities, dont get me wrong, but this meth epidemic makes this town (and surrounding ones as well) seem like a set for a zombie movie. I hardly recognize it from the Portland of my college days.
Strip Club Capital of the US.....Whoah!
Submitted by ModelMom on April 1, 2006 - 6:06pm. methamphetamines | Oregon | porn | Portland | sex | Strip Clubs | strippersPortland, Oregon is a beautiful city, there is no doubt about that. The downtown and Westside are clean, easy to navigate and a pleasure to walk around. The Eastside has its own burgeouning bohemian neighborhoods and real estate is still affordable, especially when compared to Seattle, LA, NY, and the Bay area. But what most people don't realize when thyeyfirst come to this little city is that it has a pretty sordid and seedy underworld.

I Miss L.A.
Submitted by ModelMom on March 10, 2006 - 4:34pm. Los Angeles | Oregon | Portland. climate | weather | winterWhen I moved back up to Oregon from Los Angeles over a year ago, I swore that I would never look back with any sense of homesickness or longing.....but as this Oregon winter drags on and I am freezing to the core INSIDE my house....I find myself thinking wistfully of my Southern California life.
Now don't get me wrong, I loathe the traffic, pollution, crime, and rampant superficiality of Los Angeles. But when I talk to my mother and she tells me that it is 80 degrees in the middle of January and I am sitting at my computer wrapped in fleece and wool listening to the wind blow a full scale attack on my house.......and no amount of hot tea or coffee seems to warm me.....sitting in LA traffic in sweltering heat sounds pretty damn good all of a sudden. Crazy? Perhaps. Tired of being cold? Most definitely.
Get Off The Road!!!!!
Submitted by ModelMom on March 2, 2006 - 9:16pm. DMV | driving school | driving school. driver's licenses | Los Angeles | Oregon | Portland | trafficThere are some days, today for one, when I drive around town to run a few errands or go to a job, and I am just flabbergasted at the driving skills (or lack thereof) of a lot of the people I am sharing the road with. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I thought that when I moved to Portland, Oregon I would notice a difference in the way people drive.....wrong! Despite the fact that in LA, at any given time of the day you are not going faster than 10 mph on the freeway because of the traffic and everyone drives a luxury SUV, people in Portland drive just as horribly.
