My arthroscopy posts were precipitated by my forthcoming knee cartilage operation.

Our local ACC branch( our state owned accident compensation corporation)has approved my operation and I just have to wait for the private hospital provider to set a date.

Arthroscopy: Part 3: How is arthroscopy performed?

Diagnostic arthroscopy requires the use of a hospital operating theatre or outpatient surgical unit. Before the operation the patient will be given an anasthetic - either general, spinal or a local. The skin surrounding the affected joint is sterilized. Then a sterile solution is injected into the joint to expand it, making room for the insertion of the arthroscope.

Diagnosing joint injuries and disease begins with a thorough medical history and physical examination. Sometimes x-rays and laboratory tests are required to help diagnose the problem. Do you know what arthroscopic surgery is? It is sometimes called keyhole surgery.

I have has injured my cartilage on my right knee that will necessitate arthroscopic surgery; twenty five years ago I had open surgery - which is a long incision on my knee. With arthroscopic surgery an incision is made to get a small camera in to look at the joint, and one or more incisions to get at the joint.
