On Racial Blindness (by BigBadJohnny)

on racial blindness

Last night on a US national sit-com, someone actually used the phrase "racial blindness"; unfortunately, it was used in a negative sense. The whole program annoyed me, and I eventually switched off."Racial Blindness" means that we look at someone, perhaps someone we are speaking with, and we do not see that person as part of a racial group. With a subtle set of the mind, we see only some person, and we just assume that he or she is of the same racial backgroung as we are. Its easy, it works great. In Chicago, which I truely believe is a world leader in black/white harmony, we have gone beyond 'fairness";it is not enough to treat our neighbors fairly, in matters of employment, and housing, we actually have gone the full step, made the extra effort to actually LIKE them . Similiarly, Chicago is a safe oasis for Latinos. Hispanics will usually feel very welcome here. I live in a Spanish neighborhood; many of my friends are Latino. Latinos tend to be peaceful, proud in a humble way, and law abiding. They are an asset to any community.
