Drinking a lot of water is essential if you want to reach a long-term, permanent, healthy weight loss goal. I drink a minimum of around 2 liters of plain water a day, which is about half a gallon. In general I probably drink a lot more than that.

If you are exercising regularly it’s even more important to keep yourself hydrated. The recommended intake of water for active people is quite a lot. You should at least drink a full glass of water before you exercise and then continue to hydrate yourself throughout the workout. This increases the efficiency of your workout and helps prevent exhaustion and symptoms of dehydration, like headaches and dizziness. Drinking several glasses of water an hour or two before you workout is even more efficient. Essentially, you should have a bottle of water with you at all times. By the end of a 30-40 minute cardio workout my liter sized water bottle is nearly empty.
