Are lighthouses a thing of the past?

Nothing stirs the desire for a vacation along the Oregon Coast more than a photo of a picturesque lighthouse standing high above the sea, just waiting to guide lost mariners through the storm.

The romance of that lighthouse still remains, but the actual need for these lovely structures, has, because of GPS, a modern technology, almost ceased to exist.

Introduction:
I purchased a Garmin StreetPilot i2 GPS for in-car navigation. It's one of the cheapest ways to get navigation in your car. Garmin's entry level automotive model has a small black and white backlit display (1.7� W x 1.3� H, 240 x 176 pixels, high-contrast monochrome FSTN with backlight.) This unit is tiny compared to other GPSs. I love the size. It's easily pocketable if I need to carry it from car to car. It's powered by two AA batteries or 12V car outlet.

Ever get lost? I have. I have been the Queen of Lost. If even getting lost is possible, I can do it. Somehow, through the Grace of God I have found my way home. Usually, if I am lost while driving, I just keep turning onto roads that look like they are going to lead me somewhere and bingo, they do. The problem with that is there have been a few times I have almost run out of gas in unfamiliar places. It can be scary, especially if you have kids with you.
