What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT) is a condition in which ablood clot forms in the deep veins, usually in the legs. It could be fatal if a part of the clot breaks off and blocks blood vessels in the lungs,a condition called pulmonary embolism. Worldwide,in the last five years, DVT has claimed more lives than AIDS/HIV,breast cancer,prostate cancer and road accidents combined!

Causes:DVT can be either hereditary or acquired. People with a family history should get themselves tested to figure out if they have the tendency. In cases of acquired DVT,one factor or a combination of factors like dehydration,immobility,oral contraceptive pills,hormonal therapy,etc, may be the cause.

Northeast Marine Electronics has asked me to discuss the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) new online offering of free Raster Navigational Charts (RNCs). Although I am not a fisherman (well, not much of one anyway) or a nautical navigator of any type, I am sure that this is a great benefit to everyone who plans on navigating the waters surrounding the good old USA. According to Charles Challstrom, acting assistant administrator for NOAA’s oceans and coasts, the NOAA will also be delivering weekly updates to their maps, which will no doubt serve to make nautical navigation that much safer.
