I recommend that most people start out online by spending as little money as possible at first. An online business probably involves more work than you thought. One of the first things you need to do to start your online business is consider what niche (or field) you want to be involved in. It should be an area that you enjoy because you will spend a lot of time writing about it and doing research.

The second thing you need to consider what sort of products you will use to make money. Affiliate programs are an excellent way to start your online business. An affiliate program allows you to sell someone else’s product if you don’t have your own. You can begin by register as an affiliate with a company (called the merchant) that provides a product for sale. There is usually no charge to register. Your only job is to refer people to the merchant’s website. Each time one of your visitors buys a product from the merchant, you collect a commission. The merchant is responsible for developing the product, negotiating the actual sale (through their website), handling the payment collection, sending out the product, and handling any problems. Your commission can vary according to the merchant and product but generally ranges between 30% and 75% of the sale price. You do not need a merchant account, nor do you need to have any sort of checkout procedure or shopping cart. Your only responsibility is to send people to the merchant’s website, they take care of the rest.

Everyday, people complain that they are not making money. I usually ask what kind of products and techniques they are using in their Internet business. Many times, they will say they are trying to sell affiliate products using article marketing.

At first I was puzzled by these answers because I use article marketing to sell affiliate products as well as my own products and I consistently make money. Although I make much more money from my own ebooks, I still make a fair amount from affiliate products. So why are some people very successful while others make no money at all?

I believe it is a matter of determination. First of all, in order to make anything using article marketing, you have to submit articles on a regular basis. You will achieve some success if you submit 1 article a day. However, you will be much more successful if you submit 3 articles a day. As with any business, the more you work, the more you will make. Affiliate marketing is no different.

Many of the people who are not making money are submitting just 1 or 2 articles a week to 2 or three directories. Number 1, this is not enough articles. You have to write more often than that if you want to be successful. Number 2, you should submit each article to more directories. At the very least, you should submit each of your articles to 10 (or more) of the largest directories.

Another reason why many people fail is impatience. In most cases, if you submit articles every day, you will probably make your first sale in about a month. If you are writing just 2 articles per week, it will take you about 4 months to make that first sale. Most of these people get discouraged long before that and give up on the product. Many of them will then try something new and the time frame starts all over. As a result, they never commit enough time and effort on one thing long enough to make money.

So, if you are not making money, choose a quality product and work hard on it. If you are using articles to promote it, write at least 1 article each day. If you have a good product and work hard, you will make money.
