Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of one. British researchers have found that bacteria may play a big part in SIDS. They found possibly dangerous bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli, in almost half of all babies who died of SIDS.

The Halves of Motherhood
Submitted by ModelMom on June 30, 2007 - 4:16pm. infants | motherhood | parenting | parentings | toddlers | valiumOkay, so I've decided that being a mom means only having half of everything (and more often than not, even just a quarter of said things). At the end of each day when my kids are asleep I look back at the preceding 12 or so hours and think to myself how I just can't seem to get anything done in its entirety.
How To Look Gorgeous....
Submitted by ModelMom on June 19, 2007 - 1:43pm. alternative healing | fashion | infants | parentingSo, I just got home from a run to Costco and the local supermarket (with a quick stop into Starbucks, of course) only to discover that I had been to all three places, gorgeously decorated with a lovely spray of baby spit-up all down the back of my burgundy t-shirt (nothing like spit up on a dark color) and down the side of my sleeve.

BRAIN BOOSTERS
Three weeks after, conception, an embryo's brain cells are already at work, sending messages to and retrieving them from the five senses: touch, hearing, taste, smell and sight. Providing newborns with meaningful experiences and a stimulating environment can form strong neural connections.
1) Spice Up Your Child's Immediate Environment
Early childhood experiences contributes significantly to the brain's structure and ability to absorb and process information in general, humans learn the fastest from birth to 3 years of age. A child's brain is far more impressionable than an adult's. Therefore, "young" brains are more open to learning and enriching influences.
Awesome Deals on eBay for Your Baby & Toddler!
Submitted by ModelMom on April 5, 2006 - 3:34pm. children | crib sets | ebay | infants | on-line auctions | parenting | saving money | toddlersI have to admit that I am a bit of a late comer to eBay. I wish I had gotten into it a long, long time ago thus saving myself and my husband a lot fo money. As of late, I have taken to surfing the on-line auction to look for clothing, bedding, DVD's, etc. for my son who just turned 20 months old, and I have been amazed at the items I am finding, and often winning for so litte money!
Last night I won an auction fot the most adorable Tommy Hilfiger shirt for my son...brand new with tags for only $5! This beats going to Goodwill. Not to knock the place, but I just can't stand going there since it always smells like musty clothes and mothballs and I am just not patient enough to dig through piles of clothes to find anything good. And since I am kind of a germaphobe...I am just not into touching a bunch of stuff that I know for a fact doesn't always get washed, and lord knows where it's been before getting to Goodwill.
Baby Product Review: The Angel Care Monitor
Submitted by ModelMom on April 1, 2006 - 10:00am. baby monitors | baby products | infants | motion sensors | newborns | parenting | sleep deprivationI am going to start incorporating reviews of baby products that I have used and loved into my blog postings once a week. Since I am a first time mom with a 19 month old toddler, I remember not knowing what the heck to register for before he was born and what we would need versus what seemed cool, etc. Hopefully my reviews will help any parents or parents-to-be out of this very same quandry!
The first product I want to review is the Angel Care Monitor by Bebe Sounds. This is by far the BEST baby monitor on the market. I wish I had known about this monitor before my son was born because it would have saved me a lot of sleep deprived nights when he was a newborn! What you don't realize before you have a baby of your own is that you will spontaneously wake up out of a deep sleep every 20 minutes just to check and see if your baby is still breathing. My son was a great sleeper from day one. He would only wake up once for a feeding at night so had we owned the Angel Care monitor in the beginning I could have really raked in some slumber and some sanity!
Lavender Oil: A Natural & Gentle Way to Help Your Baby Sleep
Submitted by ModelMom on March 31, 2006 - 11:02pm. aromatherapy | infants | lavender | lavender oil | parenting | sleep | toddlersI am lucky to have a toddler who has been sleeping 12 hours straight a night since he was 4 months old. But on occasion due to a cold, teething, growing pains or nightmares he will wake up crying at random times during the night.
What I have felt really helps soothe him during these times is putting some drops of lavender oil on his favorite "lovey" (aka a teddy bear or blankie) that he sleeps with and it really seems to work so far. I know that lavender has wonderful relaxation properties and has been used over the years to aid in sleep and for promoting good dreams.

Formula Feeding Is Not A Sin.
Submitted by ModelMom on February 28, 2006 - 9:20am. bottlefeeding | breastfeeding | infant formula | infant health | infants | newborns | nutrition | parentingI met another mom yesterday, a new mom with a 2 month old little girl. We were at the park and being the only two moms there we struck up a conversation. In that all too familiar way new moms can become an open book when they get to finally be around another adult, she let me know how upset and depressed she was because she has not been able to exclusively breastfeed, has been supplementing with formula, and is trying to decide if she should just feed her baby formula. This impromptu meeting inspired me to write this blog in defense of formula feeders, and to banish some of the fear and guilt being fed to them.
