I said Yesterday that I thought the still seamy Page scandal, which includes hot e-mail between Mark Foley and young male pages might be a clever smoke screen to cover up more significant if less titillating scandals.

"WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Even if former Rep. Mark Foley did not violate federal laws by exchanging sexually explicit Internet communications with underage boys, he still could find himself charged under state statutes."

Dennis Hastert, the Speaker of the House said today, “But I said on the other hand, if I fold up my tent and leave, and others have to fold up their tents and leave, then where does that leave us? It’s with the Democrats’ sweep. Then we have no ability to fight back,� he said."

And thus continues my disappointment with choosing the wrong person to bet on. I don't think that Hastert knew about the Foley page scandal. I think the question that should be asked is whether he SHOULD have known. Should he? Yes. But I cannot imagine what it is like to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America. That's a whole kind of busy that I will never be able to grasp. And I can imagine that it is very true that he does not get presented all of the information his staff gathers. And even when he is presented that info, it may not necessarily capture his attention. How do I know? Because I was a page at my state Capitol.
