Some time ago there were referenda held in France and Holland on a possible EU constitution. Both The French and the Dutch voted a very definite and resounding "NO" at 55% and 61% respectively. The UK goverment breathed a huge sigh of relief and said a promised referendum in Britain had been rendered unnecessary by the two no votes. It daren't put a referendum to the people because they know that the British would definitely vote no.

House Of Lords Reform?????
Submitted by gellybaby on February 1, 2007 - 2:02pm. constitution | Democracy | parliamentThe UK Cabinet met today to discuss plans for reform of the House of Lords. The current plan is thought to be for a half elected and half government appointed chamber. This means that government will have control over half the seats in the Lords. In view of the Cash for Honours scandal at the moment in which parties promised honours in exchange for loans and donations to party funds, one wonders whether any of the parties can be trusted to have the integrity to appoint members of the upper chamber on merit.
It Wasn't "Broke" Mr Blair
Submitted by gellybaby on November 21, 2006 - 1:33pm. constitution | politicsI notice from the Queen's speech that Tony Blair is going to tinker with the House of Lords yet again. Many people will agree with him that the House of Lords is an anachronism in a modern democratic society and so at first sight it would seem to be so.
Many people say that the House of Lords should be elected. That is to misunderstand what the Lords does and the role it plays in the British constitution. The Lords scrutinises legislation without the hot political atmosphere of the Commons. The Lords cannot discuss finance bills (Parliament Acts 1911), it cannot stop bills, it can delay them and give the Commons time to think again. The Lords has the time to go through bills clause by clause.
I Don't Feel Safe These Days
Submitted by ms zola on June 16, 2006 - 9:50pm. constitution | Fear | politics | protests | safetyI don't feel safe these days. It isn't about crime or terrorism. it isn't about the war or aging airplanes. It isn't about killer bees or bird flu. It isn't about road rage or illegal aliens crowding into our cities. It isn't about gangs or drugs or other such things.
I don't feel safe anymore because I don't feel free. The country I grew up in is not the same country I am living in today. When I was a kid and in fact most of my adult life, I never feared speaking out. It was one of the privilages guaranteed by the constitution. But that was then. Today, I read about people being arrested for protesting or placing protest flyers up in public. These are quiet people protesting quietly. I read where one college student was expelled because he turned his back when the president walked onto the stage. What is so bad about that? What is so wrong with the student's right to protest?

As I have mentioned in previous blogs, my sister goes to a local public school in MI. I went to my parent’s house to visit with her the other day and found her crying in her bed. I did the obvious thing and said, “What wrong. That’s when she told me…
“I’M JUST SOOOOOO SICK OF THE GUYS IN MY SCHOOL! She cried out.
Have HIDDEN CAMERAS Gone too Far?

Some do not feel threatened when watched on hidden monitors while others feel that their liberty and privacy are jeopardized. Security cameras should be allowed in public as long as it is for a good use like catching shoplifters and criminals. They should not be used to keep records of our daily lives. So when does National Security infringe upon personal liberty?
Pledge of Allegiance in schools - is it Unconstitutional?
Submitted by realitycheck on February 28, 2006 - 5:54am. constitution | debate | God | news | Pledge of Allegiance | prayer | Religion | schools | unconstitutional(CNN.Com)=- A federal appeals court ruled that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion" because of the addition of the phrase "under God" in 1954 by Congress.
Outraged lawmakers on both sides of the aisle blasted the ruling as "outrageous," "nuts," and "stupid." The U.S. Senate was so outraged by the decision that it passed a resolution 99-0 "expressing support for the Pledge of Allegiance" and asking Senate counsel to "seek to intervene in the case
