Immigration Tangle Offers No Peaceful Resolution

There is no good ending to this. Monday's promised massive marches were just as impressive as forecast -- and this time the crowds got it right. They waved thousands of American, not Mexican flags, including some whopper-sized Stars and Bars.

This symbolic change from the earlier immigration marches -- when predominately Mexican national flags were flown -- now places this country on a collision course with itself. Yes, this is America, a huge part of America, that is now asserting its political muscle after years of stealth takeover of the nation.

The Hispanic world, if not a majority in many areas of the nation, certainly own a controlling interest.

But, sadly, there is no resolution. Congress has drawn the lines into the sand; the House of Representatives and the Senate are simply holding ground on existing law. The "new legislation" is but a smokescreen. In a few short weeks, millions of undocumented aliens and their support families -- many who are legally American and legally here -- will suddenly become criminals and enemies of the state.

The war of ideas has begun and Monday's white-short dominated marches were the first shots. This is not going away any time soon. For the Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Teddy Kennedy to speak out gross genralizations to these crowds is certainly a disingenuous move. Even the far left in Congress, including Democrat majority leader Nancy Pelosi, agree that sealing off the border is step No. 1.

But any serious attempt to do that will strangle trade, put up a Berlin Wall-type atmosphere at the U.S.-Mexico border, and make even more weapons arrays bristle from the desert floors as the INS and National Guard swoop in.

It's war, and it's a war against ourselves.
