"Pretty Sneaky, Sis"

commercials | family life

The first person to identify that quote (either here or in a private email), wins... my respect and love. What, did you think I had enough money to offer a prize or something? Sheesh!

In other news, I've eaten 5,280 jumbo semi-sweet chocolate chips while waiting for the baby to wake up and cry for the billionth time this evening.

Commercials I LOATHE

comedy | commercials | entertainment | humor | manodogs | TV

I don't generally pay commercials much attention, but there are some pretty good ones. Some are funny -- downright hilarious, sometimes -- others have neat effects or an amusing situation, but for the most part they're just commercials and I pay them no mind.

But every so often, there comes a commercial that annoys the living hell out of me. It happens to everyone, it just seems that when it happens to me, it's the commercial(s) they show every commercial break.

This sort of thing sounds kind of silly and inconsequential, but it's a lot like getting an ugly look from a stranger in a supermarket: it can ruin your whole day, if you let it. A dumb jingle gets stuck in your head and your every other thought turns back to that until you want to drive a nail through your ear. Some quirkily-delivered phrase ("Where's the beef?!") gets stuck in your head and you keep thinking it until the compulsion to act it out becomes too much to bear, then you find yourself in the middle of the supermarket, screaming, "Try my product!"

And Speaking of Creepy Commercials......

advertising | car accidents | commercials | Volkswagen

Another blogger posted about a really creepy Skittles commercial the other day (and as soon as I dig up who it was, I will put a link on here....I promise!) and it got me to thinking that there really are quite a few rather disturbing ad campaigns running on the telly lately.

The one that really gets me is the new Volkswagen campaign that shows people in very realistic conversations in their cars getting into severe collisions, only to get out in one piece due to the safety of the car, etc. Anyways, these commercials are pretty disturbing in that they are so realistic. And because I already know that there really are a plethora of horrible drivers on the road, now every time I drive I find myself thinking about those TV spots and I am getting really paranoid, especially when I have my son in the car with me. Thanks to these spots it is now very easy to envision oneself getting into one of these accidents.

Bratz commercial. I smell a lawsuit.

baby | bratz | commercials | dolls | lawsuit

I just saw a commercial for some form of Bratz doll. While I know a lot of people hate these dolls, the offensive part about this was the commercial itself.

In the jingle, they were singing, "Doing the Bratz baby shake." Oh boy. Did they think that one through?? Do we really want to encourage baby shaking?? *groan*

I don't think this commercial is long for the airwaves.

Low-Blow Advertising

advertisements | commercials | rant

[b] Now maybe it's just me, but I'm personally getting pretty fed up with advertisers presuming that we're all dim. There are many "low-blow" techniques used in marketing, but the ones that just scream out at me "We're doing this because we know none of you will catch on" really irk me!

For example, some of Charmin's TV commercials quote that they are better "than the regular kitten brand." Now I don't know about you all, but I'm plum stumped as to what brand they're mentioning here! How about all of those toothpaste commercials? Have you noticed that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend every toothpaste? Wait a minute. That doesn't add up! Well, actually it does. They never claimed that 9 out of 10 dentists recommend their toothpaste above all others. Sneaky... not.

Looking for Super Bowl commercials online is beginning to replace the old tradition of water cooler chat about the game or who exposed their breasts at half time. By now, we all know that Jerome Bettis and the Steelers put a whippin’ on Seattle. Sure the Baltimore Ravens couldn’t make it this year - but it’s great to see Pittsburgh representing the AFC and bringing home the Lombardi trophy.

Creepy Commercials

commercials | creepy | disturbing | Skittles

Television advertising execs get paid lots of money to come up with commercials that prompt consumers to buy their products.

How is it that some of these people get paid megabucks to come up with creepy, disturbing, and stupid commercials.

Right now, the commercial that creeps me out the most is a Skittles commercial. You might have seen it: A woman is interviewing a long-haired, bearded man for a job. She tells him they're looking for someone with more experience. While she is talking, his beard - which is sort of like a long, hairy appendage - is picking up Skittles and feeding them to her. The beard is also rubbing her face as she talks.

A Nation Of Pill Poppers

The late, great Bill Hicks once remarked upon hearing an assessment that the US was losing the war on drugs that (and I paraphrase) it meant a war was being fought and the people on drugs were winning.
