This is "Part 2" of my "Cost of Living in the Philippines in 2008" series. This part consists primarily of food and beverage. Pardon me for putting "creamer" inside "beverages" as I don't know exactly what category it should be included in. Anyway, the prices indicated below are SM Supermarket prices (particularly SM Manila's) gathered on August 18, 2008 (Monday) unless otherwise specified.
Gathering all these information took me about a little less than two hours of running up and down the aisles and listing down the prices manually (with pen and paper), with people staring at me much of the time (also, I think some of the supermarket personnel were suspicious of me... either that or I'm just being paranoid). For this, I would like to emphasize that although much care is taken in assuring that all information provided herein are correct, some errors MAY still be present... after all, I'm only human. As such, you SHOULD subject the information contained herein to further verification before using them for whatever reason. And, as should be expected in things such as these, all these are subject to change over time.
Just for the record, I did buy a few things during my wandering... a carton of Cowhead Pure Milk (1 liter carton), a 300-gram bag of Milo, a 170-gram box of Nestle Coco Crunch, and a (big) refill bag of Joy (Antibac) dishwashing liquid (the price of which I didn't bother to take down anymore).
(Just to give reference points, I’ll be including the latest monetary exchange rates and the minimum daily wage in every post I make regarding this matter)
Philippine Peso Exchange Rate:
to the U.S. Dollar = P45.59527 (as of August 20, 2008 – 1:27 pm)
to the Euro = P67.01274 (as of August 20, 2008 - 1:28 pm)
Minimum Daily Wage (as of August 20, 2008): P382.00

Coffee | daytona beach | fired | police | police officer | Starbucks
A police officer in Daytona Beach, Florida has been fired because of a cup of coffee. How is this possible you might ask. Well, apparently after a Starbucks coffee shop refused to serve Lt. Major Garvin with free coffee and wanted him to pay for it the officer replied to them that his response time may be a little slower should they have any situations there at the coffee house. Lt. Major Garvin told them that a two minute response time may turn into a fifteen minute response time.

Heartburn can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This is due to the backwash of stomach acids damaging the esophageal lining, which can cause cell changes that can lead to caner.
It is recommended to drink a minimal amount of coffee and citrus juices. It is also a good idea to cut back on spicy foods to control heart burn. H2 blockers, such as Zantac, and proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec, can help to reduce symptoms and encourage the healing of damaged tissues.

1) A lack of the mineral magnesium, seems to add to the problem. Its found in meat, seafoods, green veggies and again, dairy products. Don't overdo the meat, though, as too much protein, also contributes by making the body excrete calcium.

Women And Coffeeby: Kadence Buchanan
I do not know about you, but for me, coffee drinking, especially in the morning or early evening, is more than a simple habit or cultural characteristic. Actually, it has become a necessity without which I cannot open my eyes and stand on my two feet all day. According to researchers, I am not alone. Nearly 80% of the U.S. population drinks coffee on a daily basis. The caffeine measured to be contained in a cup of coffee, me and you daily consume, is around 80-130 mg. But while the medical community has warned the public of the health risks associated to caffeine intake, there still is very little linking between coffee and health problems, except in a very few cases.

Ok, I give up. Every year I swear that I am gonna start eating healthier and every year I fail miserably. I feed my kids super healthy, fresh foods. I'm something of a nutrition nazi with them with the occasional french fries and happy meal thrown in for a little rebellion, but I suck with myself.

How Bad Do you Crave Coffee? I can't seem to function at all if I haven't had my daily dose!!!
I crave coffee like a drug addict craves his high! It just does something to me. I need coffee and I need it bad.
I love Starbucks and really any other coffee product. I think a good way to even increase the crave for coffee would be to sell coffee beans like you would jelly beans.

Coffee | Coffee People | Doutor | monopoly | Starbucks | Torrefazione
At least, it has officially taken over Portland, Oregon! About a year ago, the Seattle based coffee monopoly bought out Portland's own Torrefazione, which was a quaint little local coffee chain with 3 or 4 shops and always had wonderful coffee, pastries, and panini that you could enjoy in a very authentic Tuscan atmosphere. You wanted to eat your panino and have your caffe latte in the shop? No problem. It would come served to you in hand painted Italian ceramic mugs & plates. Ambience. It was wonderful.....then Starbucks took over, promptly shut down all the locations and that was that.

Today is one of those days where my brain has shut down, and I can't find the "resume" button. I just haven't been able to get anything done, because I have such a bad headache. I have been meandering around a bit, but mostly sitting in a chair trying not to aggravate my headache. Obviously, I do not have any pain medication in the house. And it's too sunny outside to go out, the sun hurts my eyes, haha.

Oh, Lovely little coffee bean,
“Morning you have meant
When you are crushed and percolated,
You have such an marvelous scent
When you are stirred with cream, so sweet,
I savor your rich taste
You waken desire to drink so fast,
But you must not wish haste
For when you arrive at my tender lips,
Freshly from your pot,
Your caress could burn my tongue,

Coffee | coffee pot | dishwashers | Gevalia | luck | Target
So I wake up this morning like the zombie that I usually am (I am NOT a morning person, never have been, never will be....but my toddler is....*sigh*) and half dragged myself to the dishwasher to pull out our coffee pot so that I could start my daily ritual of grind, pour water, brew, and imbibe.
I pulled out the pot and set it in the coffee maker then realized that large shards of glass were everywhere inside my dishwasher. I looked at the pot and realized that only the plastic handle and lid were attached to a small ring of glass....my coffee pot had exploded in the dishwasher overnight! And I was too tired to realize it first thing when I pulled it out.
