Shame on Oliver Stone
Submitted by Dylan Casey on May 30, 2006 - 8:40pm. cinema | entertainment | film | moviesLike every other movie lover, I spent one night last weekend at The Da Vinci Code. I didn't expect much, in fact, I expected annoyance at the film's poor dialogue and unavoidable melodrama, but my aggravation came slightly sooner than I had expected. One of the trailers shown before the film was for Oliver Stone's long-time-coming 9/11 story. A mustachioed Nicolas Cage appears on the screen, a la Joaquin Phoenix in Ladder 49. There are some big explosions followed by some grand music and Nicolas Cage imparting hope to his fellows trapped under the wreckage of the building. This is a problem for me. In the wake of the bore that was United 93, I am tired of the exploitation of tragedy. The difference here is in the fact that United 93 attempted to keep the film mundane and empathized with its audience. The lack of big name stars and outlandish special effects were both testaments to some vestiges of artistic and humane integrity. All that aside, I'd still call it an exploitation of a tragedy that has not yet come to rest. Stone's exploitation, however, is sickening and simply intolerable. With the current instability of international affairs in this country and the problems that have risen from 9/11, it is obvious that this wound is worse than unhealed, it's still open and bleeding.
