Many attorneys seek to specialize in one area or another, even though they often have a disclaimer telling you the states in which they practice do not allow for specialization and so they are not claiming to be specialists. Little tricks like that are what make attorneys some of the least trusted people in any profession.

Touche' Admin, Touche'

I reread them frequently, always looking for the bubbled-up, thin-skinned loop-hole that will allow me to manifest My Evil...you run a tight ship in some aspects, but there are ways and means to my ends.
New York Lawyers Defend 9/11 Widows
Submitted by gracepub on September 16, 2006 - 12:03pm. attorney | Lawyer | New YorkA widow who was being taken advantage of sought help from Simmons, Jannace & Stagg . She needed someone to protect her against an attorney who tried to charge a $2,000,000 contingency fee. This lawyer filed suit in federal court seeking a declaratory judgment entitling him to his fee.
Simmons, Jannace & Stagg responded with a clever case that challenged the Federal court's actions, entreating them to stay out of the problem. The federal court, after hearing argument, agreed that the Victims Compensation Fund did not provide federal court jurisdiction.

Submitted by Jeanne Gibson on August 25, 2006 - 5:02pm. 911 Victims' Compensation Fund | attorney | ethicsI have read a lot of lawyer jokes in my time; some bad and some good. Most of the jokes tend to show the lawyer as the bad guy, and I would imagine that a decent man or woman making a living as a lawyer, would resent constantly being the brunt of such jokes. I know I would.
Just as in every other field, there are lawyers who are honest and who really care about providing service to their clients at the most reasonable cost possible. Unfortunately, it only takes one really bad one to give the whole profession a bad name.
You Can't Win Them All
Submitted by Jeanne Gibson on July 22, 2006 - 2:36pm. attorney | Bullies | Ehlers Danlos Syndrome | swimmingMost of us have heard the phrase, "You can’t win them all," many, many times, and, perhaps, even used it ourselves. There is a lot of truth in the statement, so it is probably a good idea, to not even try. Wise people pick their battles carefully, choosing to fight only when they know they can win, or when a principle they cannot bear to see compromised is at stake.
When we are children, we find out that there are certain bullies in the class that we, in most cases, make every effort to avoid. True, there are times when the behavior of the bully goes beyond what we can accept and we choose to fight, no matter what the outcome, but, in general, we avoid confrontation with cantankerous foes.

Here in the US, we live in a litigious society. Should someone stare at you the wrong way, should you fail to receive a pony for your birthday, should you find a finger in your chili, then filing a lawsuit is imperative (whether the grievance is legitimate or not).
