The Process of Becoming

Addiction | inspiration | life's journey | personal development | recovery | self-help

Everyday I sit on a bench surrounded by this great big trimmed hedge in my mothers garden, sipping my coffee and slowly introducing myself to the new day. I love to sit and feel the Sun’s gentle morning kiss upon my face as the sweet, milky flavor of the coffee rolls on my tongue. I take as much time as necessary allowing myself to fully absorb the beauty all around me as I search out every color of the rainbow in the garden….

How to avert gaming addiction

Addiction | game | horror

World of Warcraft, Runescape, Tibia, Maple Story, Eve Online, Counter Strike, Battlefield-the list of games that I have played goes on and on. Some were pretty much as waste of time, like Runescape, and some others were really fun. I had not played much growing up, until I hit highschool, and then I really started gaming a lot. When I say a lot, I mean ALOT-games became a regular part of life as I knew it. I quickly became addicted, after falling into a type of game called a Massively Multi player Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG for short. In short, I had become addicted to gaming, partially thanks to these types of games. I was stuck. However, I eventually pulled myself out of this, and am here to talk about it. Before we start, let us be clear about one thing-games are great, and I still love playing games. However, there is a point where you have to set priorities, and decide what you are going to let control your life and focus your time on.

Everyday there is some breaking news story about some minor or semi-major ‘celebrity’ going to, coming out of, or escaping from rehab. Perhaps the news should have a separate section dedicated to ‘rehab news’ with details of the most recent sad celebrity cases and their addiction adventures.

I admit it. Right here, right now, I'm an addict! I am not kidding! I have been playing the GameHouse Mah-Jong Medley "night vision", free-cell game for about two years now. I have yet to clear the board on that particular puzzle.

Alcoholism and Diabetes-Part II

Addiction

Studies have shown that low blood sugar can induce the craving for alcohol. The studies also show that a craving for sweets may be an early indication of alcoholism. I had no idea that a sugar addiction could actually predict an alcohol addiction. Reducing the intake of sugar and maintaining a stable blood sugar level can lower the cravings for alcohol. It is important to also reduce caffeine intake because it hinders the ability to stabilize blood sugar levels.

I Knew Those PSAs Were Lying

Addiction | Lies | nicotine patch | PSA | quitting | rant | smoking

Almost 30 years ago I started smoking. Why? Cause I was a dumb kid who succumbed to peer-pressure. Of course, the PSAa they were running then said that smoking wouldn't make me cool. They were lying. Smoking did make me cool. Even my friends who didn't smoke thought it was cool that I did.

Are you over reading?

Addiction | dreaming | reading | writing

I just read an article about people who spend too much time reading, to the point they cut themselves off from regular social interactions. It was said that these people spend the bulk of their time fantasizing and daydreaming, rather than engaging with others, perhaps as an escape from a boring, or stressful reality.

Then we have the writers who not only read about fantasy worlds, they create them. A writer balled up in a corner living in his own mind for hours, or even days at a time, may fall into this category. Is it possible to write yourself into a detached dream world?

I Hate Sudoku

Addiction | crosswords | sudoku

Two years ago, I had never heard of Sudoku. Now, Sudoku stares me in the face every time I turn around.

My introduction to Sudoku came when my grandson brought a Sudoku puzzle to me one evening and explained that it was part of his math assignment. It looked more like a game to me, and, since I had always enjoyed crossword puzzles, I made myself a copy of his puzzle and told him I would race him to see who could finish first.

SMOKING,SMOKERS & REASONS TO QUIT

Addiction | aging | Cancer | carbon monoxide | nicotine | smoking

I hate smoking. I have lost too many friends and close relatives to the effects of tobbacco ----cancer----heart disease. It is a nasty habit which is not only dangerous....but annoying....There is little worse than sitting in the same room as someone who smokes. Their foul habit permeates the room and poisons the air.

There was a time when smoking was depicted as cool and sophisticated but today it looks cheap and ignorrant. It is ANYTHING BUT cool.

Not Giving Up

Addiction | Food | food addiction | Health | healthy eatin | healthy weight loss | overeating | weight loss

Often when people decide to get healthy and lose weight things go well for a few days, maybe a week or so, and then something happens which sends the individual back into his or her unhealthy eating patterns.

There are many possible factors in this equation, but what it seems to often boil down to is deprivation.

If you tell yourself that you will not eat one single morsel of anything remotely fattening or unhealthy, there comes a point of temptation when it becomes difficult to stick to your resolve. Often it’s nearly impossible because you have set unrealistic expectations for yourself.

NO TV??? yes, I'm serious!

Addiction | family | quality time | TV

As you could tell from my previous post, I enjoy reality TV. IN fact, I enjoy it SO much, it's really become almost crippling. What's become really scary, is that I watch my kids becoming "addicted" to their favorite shows as well. And I really don't like that.

Since TODAY is the last day of school, my husband and I have made the radical decision to cancel our cable subscription for the summer. NO TV FOR THREE MONTHS!!! WOW.
