There are scientists that have found a gene that might raise the chances of getting the most common kind of Alzheimer’s disease by 45 percent in people who inherit a certain form of the disease. The gene affects a brain cell’s ability to take in calcium. Hopefully, drugs can be made to fight this effect. Most people are over the age of 65 that are affected by the disease.

Submitted by amandaberryman on June 3, 2008 - 12:17pm. brain | calorie | calories | cravings | diet | exercise | Food | Foods | hormones | leptin | people | scienceIt is found that how tempting food may seem could depend on a person’s level of the hormone leptin. Weight is not only controlled by calorie intake and exercise, but also by complex brain complexes. Someday, scientists might be able to develop weight-loss drugs that modify the brain’s reaction to food.
Scientists Make First Genetically Modified Embryo
Submitted by amandaberryman on May 13, 2008 - 7:52am. babies | baby | child | children | embryo | gene | genes | genetic | genetics | human | science | scientistsFor the first time, scientists have been able to genetically alter a human embryo. Researchers used an abnormal embryo that could never have developed into a baby to do the project.
The project raises the possibilities that people could be able to create designer babies in the future and scientists could insert certain genes into an embryo to produce babies with certain characteristics, such as higher intelligence and better athletic abilities. Some people think that this is wrong and turns children into designed objects and would create an unequal society where some people would be considered genetically superior while other people who are born without genetic injections would be inferior.
What is Darwin IV planet?
Submitted by pinakigoswami on February 9, 2008 - 7:31pm. atmospheric data | DRAMA | ecosystem | gravity | life | planet | science | storyDarwin IV is a fictional planet 6.5 light years from the Earth, with two suns and 60% gravity. It was depicted in the series 'Alien Planet' based on Wayne Barlowe's book "Expedition".According to the story, after identifying Darwin IV as a world that could support life.Earth sends a pilot mission consisting of the mothership Von Braun and three probes:Balboa,Da Vinci and Newton. This unmanned fleet is responsible for finding and assessing any life forms on Darwin IV.Initially, the expectation is to find microscopic life, but the probes soon find themselves in the middle of a developed ecosystem teeming with life of all sizes. The viewer experiences Darwin IV through the eyes of the probes Ike(Newton) and Leo(Da Vinci),whose data re relayed back to the mothership and then communicated to Earth. The biological and atmospheric data from the probes and mothership are relayed to viewers through computer voice simulation and on-screen readouts. The drama on Darwin IV is motivated by real science missions, such as the NASA Origins Program and the NASA/JPL Planet-Finder Mission,as well as the European Space Agency's Darwin Project.

chemical which change our mood-sertonin
Submitted by nikk.solutions on February 4, 2008 - 4:57am. Health | scienceSerotonin is a hormone that is directly related to the feeling of happiness and contentment. In the early years man had to hunt for food to survive. Their main concern was keeping their belly full. There are two brains in our body which are connected to each other: our stomach's brain and our thinking brain. The one can't function without the other. In order to feed the 'brains' with the necessary fuel you need to bear in mind what you actually put in your mouth - for your stomach's brain- and what thought processes you apply in different situations in your life-your thinking brain. So, you should care of your diet ie. follow a more balanced one (you can visit a dietician who will follow you more closely) and as for your thinking brain take up some form of mild exercise to get those endorphins going and of course keep yourself happy by avoiding stressful situations like hell on high water. How? Put yourself first and put your happiness first. YOU are responsible for your own happiness.

Theists and Atheists : Who Outnumber Whom?
Submitted by Kayzzaman on July 21, 2007 - 10:48am. Manna | Marx | NATURE | Religion | science | Spiritual BeingWho outnumbers whom? The atheist or the theist?
This is a great contention. It can be said with great amount of certainty that the number of the atheists are gradually on the rise. But the breed of theists is overwhelming and is in absolute majority. And in the long run they will remain so. The atheists will never be in a position to outnumber them. This is no beating about the bush.

Do You Know? | english | meaning | scienceIn the broadest sense, science (from the Latin "to know") refers to any systematic methodology which attempts to collect accurate information about reality and to model this in a way which can be used to make reliable, concrete and quantitative predictions about future events and observations. In a more restricted sense, science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge based on the scientific method, as well as to the organized body of knowledge gained through such research. Science as defined above is sometimes termed pure science to differentiate it from applied science, which is the application of scientific research to specific human needs.
