Education, Education, Education?

education | learning | teaching

The United Kingdom government seems to make policy announcements on the hoof without thinking them through. Recently there was an announcement that all primary school children are to have five hours of cultural activity per week. This is all very well and good and cultural activities are very good for children but how are poor hard-pressed teachers to fit this into an over-burdened timetable already beset by government interference.

A Simple Message To That One "fake" Metor

learning | mentor | student | teaching

Now days they are a lot of “fake” people out in the world, but no one tops the list then that one “fake” mentor. Every now and then two people connect to work with one another - one that is experience and one that it is not. The one that is experience agrees to help the one that it is not so experience and show them the ropes, becoming the mentor. After agreement of one been a mentor, these people (mentors) go out and ignore the inexperience person. Why is this? Why offer some one your help and never return a simple answer? Would it be easier or better to let the person know that you supposed to be mentoring that you are busy but did not forget about them, or tell them that you can not be their mentor. There is no need to go on leading one person that they have help when they really do not. Aren’t you a human being? Aren’t we family in one way or the other? Everyday I here stories about people that does this to them on a daily routine. I honest believe that these “fake” mentors are considered to be one of many groups that are lower then dirt. Remember that you (the mentor) yourself was in the same boat once upon a time, you were in a position where you did not know anything about anything and needed help to put your foot in the door. This is the same as those seeking help, all they are trying to do is put their foot in the door.

So Jen, are you seeing anyone?

children | family | growing up | independance | learning | living | womanhood | young adult

I'm getting to that age. The age where my family casually throws in the comments like, "so Jen...are u seeing anyone?" And "where are the grandkids?" And even though they act like it's all a joke, I know those comments don't just come out of nowhere. Don't get me wrong, there are certain fleeting moments where i realize it is entirely possible (but unlikely, I think...) that I could end up alone surrounded by cats and dogs (but how bad could THAT really be?). Most of the time though, I'm thankful for the way I've chosen to live my life. Plus, come on, it's 2007 not 1907.

Why study linguistics?

DAYS | fanalow | language | learning | odd news | TONGUE | words

One of the questions you may ask is why study linguistics?

Linguistics deals with how to analyze any human language, thus making it an interesting subject. One doesn't necessarily need to speak any particular language to understand linguistics. It is not as narrow as one might think; there are plenty of applications of linguistics that are useful in everyday life. Like mentioned earlier, it does not necessarily have to be a technical topic at all. Linguistics can be explained using terms that most people can understand, and technical terms can be used sparingly.

Have you noticed that more and more words, which are usually nouns, are suddenly turning into verbs? This is the act of verbification: the creation of verbs from words that are normally other parts of speech.

Are You A College Dropout?

academic credit | graduate | learning

Did you drop out of school at a young age, or get so bogged down with required classes when you did go to college that you missed out on taking a lot of things you would really have enjoyed. I know I did.

A couple of years after I graduated, I enrolled in a correspondence course called, Children’s Literature, at a college about 40 miles from my home. I had majored in English for Secondary Schools, but was really interested in children’s books because of my own two small children at home. At that time, I was able to get credit toward my master’s degree for the correspondence course. Unfortunately, that college no longer offers correspondence courses for academic credit due to financial restraints.

Is There Really Such a Thing as a Dumb Dog?

dog training | dogs | family life | learning | pets | Vizslas | Whippets

Is there really such a thing as a dumb dog?

I was having a conversation with a dog-training friend last night about a dog she had tried to train a few times for agility, which is a sport that involves having your dog do an obstacle course. She was telling me how incredibly dumb this dog was. She didn't go into detail, but one of her reasons for thinking the dog was dumb was because it was too excited to learn anything in the presence of food. So when she used food to lure the dog into position, for example, the dog was unable to move into that position because she was too busy thinking about/trying to get the food. Of course, my friend could never move to the next step, fading the lure, because the dog never had a clue that it was doing anything other than following the food. This was a very different response than she had gotten from her own dog, who could follow the food and learn at the same time.

I Think I See The Light

discovery | growth | insight | learning

I think now I know how to live my life. It has taken a very long time, with many ups and downs. Yet, as many a wise one has suggested, perseverance has paid off. Indeed, I now see the light!

When they first told me I would go to Hell, I did not know what they meant. I was young, and I was scared. So, I tried to change. No longer would I use the Lords name in vain. No longer would I manipulate my body in apparent sacrilege. No longer would I fantasize about things that I found out were evil, and of the devils’ domain.
