When Governments Don't Care About Their People

government corruption | Katrina | Myanmar | natural disasters | POVERTY

So, the powers that be in Myanmar have decided they don't want the help of the U.N. or anyone else, and they're going to hoard the food supplies for themselves rather than take care of their own people. Why am I not surprised by this?

Peace of Mind in a Binder

(NewsUSA) - If you had just 10 minutes to evacuate your house before it was destroyed by a natural disaster, could you quickly gather all of your personal, financial, legal and health records to rebuild your life?

Many Americans couldn't, according to a recent survey by major insurance companies. In fact, only 38 percent of homeowners in hurricane-prone areas in Gulf and Atlantic coast communities stored important documents in a safe place. Only 37 percent made an inventory of their personal possessions.

The Rainbow

flood | God | Katrina | peace | promise | Rainbow

Who doesn’t love a rainbow? That brightly colored symbol of hope and peace was especially welcome to those of us on the coast after Katrina. My sister even took pictures of the post-Katrina rainbow. And as I looked up in the sky, I remembered God’s promise: Never again will a flood be sent to destroy all life on earth.
Armageddon has been foretold, and it promises to be a spectacular fight before good triumphs over evil. And the earth and its inhabitants will face many natural disasters, but there will never be another global flood, although it certainly felt as if God’s wrath was raining down upon Mississippi and Louisiana during that frightful hurricane last year. Never was a rainbow and all that it promises more welcome than it was then.

In a hurricane...here it comes.

Fear | flood | hurricane | Katrina | rain | weather

The power’s off, the wind is blowing like crazy outside, the rain is beating down on the house from all directions. I live in small down, surrounded by three big rivers, so tropical storms like these tend to make everyone a bit nervous. Especially after the hurricane a few years ago; that year the water came so high that it destroyed five blocks of homes. We don’t live at that end of town, but here the water came right up to the doorstep, and completely flooded the garage.

What Is That Song In That One Commercial...

Fema | Fiction | Katrina | maintain websites | music | New Orleans | television

It's happened to probably everyone that watches any television. You're busy ignoring the commercial when a song being used to promote some product catches your ear. Sometimes it will be something you know like Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll" or Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty In Pink." However, with radio playlists so unadventurous and MTV having forgotten for what the M once stood, a lot of lesser-known artists are finding that licensing their songs for commercial use a boon for exposure and a bit of money. So what do you do when you find the song from the Suzuki Grand Vitarra ad lodged in your head (you know the one - guy kisses girl, cliff jumps...) and you CAN'T identify it to either purchase or know whom to blame? There are several good resources.

The New Millennium Devil's Dictionary - Charity

charity | humor | Katrina | New Millennium Devil's Dictionary | Religion | satire

CHARITY, n. Evidence for the existence of disposable income, usually obtained under circumstances that created the need for the charity – as when the moneyed interests in Gulf Coast cities invest profits and tax dollars in sports megastadia, but not in the means to keep those stadia, or the people that resort to them, above water.

Ah, Charity! Afar your chanting sounds!
