I sold the first article I ever submitted. It was to Astronomy magazine. I sold the second article I ever submitted to Cat Fancy. The third article I submitted was accepted, too, by Reader's Digest.

Writin' About Real Estate

freelance writing | real estate | writing gigs

I've been pretty lucky lately. I have a couple freelance writing gigs that involve writing about real estate. I have three clients that will give me a list of dozens of cities to write about and they pay pretty well, too. The best part is that they always have more work waiting for me whenever I get each list done.

The Internet Amazes Me

freelance writing

As a publisher, magazine editor, and cover designer, I am always looking for good images. It amazes me how many places sell on the web - and what you can buy.

I just found a website that sold Penn State football photos. I mean, who would have thought of starting an online business selling football photos. But, the quality is professional, and the colors vibrant.

Travel in Style

freelance writing | Travel Writing

I've been doing a lot of travel writing this year, basically because I would like to stay in Scotland or England for a few months within the next couple of years.

I started planning early, to give me topics to write about, and learned very quickly that I saved myself a lot of grief by planning early. There are so many things to take into consideration when planning a trip that go far beyond 'do I buy cheap luggage or invest in Samsonite luggage?'

I was talking to litekeeper last night and the conversation turned to paid freelance writing places. We laughed at the number of times we saw bloggers talk about these posts, and how we were so 'noble' as to tell the world that these opportunities were scams. But - we both grew up.

Freelance Writing: Travel Writing

freelance writing | Travel Writing | work at home

I make a fair bit of money each month as a travel writer. I spend a lot of time encouraging freelance writers to become travel writers, but to do that, you should travel.

It not only gives you a sense of travelling and creates a 'mood' for your articles, but it also gives you something to write about.

A Writer's Life

A good thing about being a freelance writer: I'm sitting here in my pajamas at work while my daughter crawls around getting into things. It's almost 10:30am and I haven't combed my hair.

Untitled - Chapter One - Aiden and the Lions

alphaandomega | Fiction | freelance writing | geminian | novel | The Geminian

Once there was a young boy named Aiden who lived in a large city. He liked his city very much, although he wasn't sure why. In the winter, it was very cold and in the summer it was very hot with very little rain, so because of this, the streets in his city were bumpy and cracked, and the grass very dry and was rarely green. It was one of Aiden's chores to water and weed the lawn around his family's house. He didn't enjoy chores very much but he did, for some reason, enjoy taking care of the lawn.

Freelance Writing - Getting Started

freelance writing | Get Paid to Write | work at home

The life of a writer appears to have many perks. The uninitiated envisions us working in our pajamas while writing fluff about far away places, beautiful people, and spectacular adventures. After chuckling, we patiently explain how many hours it can take to research an article, or the number of times an article is submitted before it sells.

A Project Drags On...

I just got back from a 10 day vacation. I had some down time (my husband was climbing Mount Rainier and it took several days) so I decided to take on a project.

Well, trying to connect to the internet was quite interesting. The only place I could find that had internet had a signal strength of "very poor" (and I had to pay $5 for the password!) It worked okay for most things, but one of the assignments required that I listen to music.

Visiting England & Maybe Australia

freelance writing

I am visiting England next year. The objective is to take enough pictures of old costumes and buildings that I can stop spending hours looking for photos I can use on book covers. At first, I never thought about visiting England. Then, I realized that it will cost less than $1500 for one week, including flight.
