Yesterday, I got to watch the much-anticipated Batman movie. Today's Yahoo news says it broke the record for biggest weekend box-office ever.
I found the movie pretty impressive. It had all the makings of a great comic-based film: adrenaline-pumping action, props & costume upgrades, a tormented hero, and a story that will keep you at the edge of your seat. But what really impressed me here were the villains. As the Joker put it: "a better class of criminals."

film | gary oldman | movie | Paddy Considine | The Backwoods
A friend of mine once said that I was so biased toward Gary Oldman that I would applaud his performance in changing a tire. Well, Huey, I guess you were right because his role in this film is almost the equivalent of changing a tire and I still enjoyed watching him.

Dead Fish | film | gary oldman | movie | pussy willow
Well, yeah, they do. But Dead Fish, the movie, does not stink. The film hasn’t gotten much, if any, publicity. If you’re not a Gary Oldman fan who’s been haunting the video shops waiting for this film to be released in the U.S.(for the last 2 years, thank you, very much), chances are you haven’t even heard of it. So, if you are one of the millions in the U.S. who don’t have the foggiest idea what Dead Fish is (are?), let me be the first to recommend that you rent this DVD the next time you’re in the mood for a good, fun movie.

Snow Angels- Not to be confused with the uplifting "Snow Cake," this is a thoroughly depressing film that while very good, I'll never want to watch again. Admittedly I'd never seen a David Gordon Green film prior to this one but my guess is that they're all equally if not more bleak.

Leatherheads- George Clooney has been dubbed "the last movie star." I don't agree with that statement but I will say that in the right role, Clooney can shine brightly. I'm not talking about his award winning work in high minded films like "Syriana" and "Michael Clayton." I'm talking about fast talking screwballs like Ulysses Everett McGill in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" It's the kind of character Clooney does best. Based on this and my love of the snappy dialogue of films like "His Girl Friday," I was very excited for "Leatherheads."

"You are interested in the unknown. The mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here."
Or more likely you're here to read film reviews. I plan on loading this site full of them in the coming weeks, with reviews of movies new and old. Also, movie and TV news, rants, raves, and every once in awhile I may something that's actually insightful. Really. It might happen. First up, here's a look at a couple of classic films I re-watched recently that just don't get the love they deserve. Sure they have their fans, but not enough of them. So here we go!

film | McG | McSpaced | remakes | spaced | television
Ok, I really wasn’t going to weigh in here because I’ve never seen 'Spaced'. Not only have I not had cable tv consistantly for a few years now, but I’ve also lived in parts of the country that don’t carry BBC America (though I’ve *heard* Spaced wasn’t on the BBC, so I guess that doesn’t matter!).

Cartoons | childhood | comics | film | g i joe | movies | ninja turtles | predictions | transformers | trends
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then the Transformers, and now an officemate just told me that G.I. Joe is being turned into a movie. Not to mention X-Men, Spiderman, and Fantastic 4. See the trend here? It seems the movie industry has run out of original ideas and are cashing in on our childhood (or theirs). Not that that's a bad thing. It's always a treat to look back to the past and see how much different it is from today. For a couple of hours, we become innocent children staring with wonder at the TV screen, watching Robots transforming to cars. We can sit back and laugh at how we used to think that it was so cool to have a turtle who was a mutant, a ninja, and a teenager who used expressions like "Dude" and "Cowabanga!" (what teenager in this day and age use those expressions?)
