I’m in a very rant-and-rave-against-the-injustices-in-the-world kind of mood right now. I just witnessed a friend being humiliated for the clothes she was wearing. It is so annoying when snobbish bitchy people make snide comments on other people’s clothes, which is not according to their own taste and accepted notion of what is ‘hip’ and ‘in’. They seem to take the ‘Clothes make or break a person’ maxim to heart and judge everyone’s moral make-up by that. If you don’t dress right, then you must be the lowest scum on the surface of the earth. Well, that’s crap. I am an aspiring fashion designer, and I hold that trendy clothes are not the only thing that produce or influence a person’s style.
Style is actually a debatable issue. Most people think it’s just the clothes straight out of Vanity Fair or Vogue, while some agree with me upon style being the reflection of one’s personality. I think style is what sets one person apart from another. Every person has his personal flair which is expressed in his or her activities. One does not have to be beautiful or rich in order to be stylish. A person’s idiosyncrasies can be his style, because that is what makes him different from other people, what he is identified with. A person’s attitude is coloured by his opinions and views, giving the person his own characteristic aura of style. Style is expressed in a person’s gait, his conversation, his sense of fashion, in all of one’s daily activities. A person’s confidence in himself, his self-assurance makes him modish. He sets his own trends, without stepping onto the bandwagon and aping the masses. He walks into a room oozing self-confidence and makes everyone turn to notice him. A stylish person can carry off an ensemble of a pair of shorts and a tee with as much élan as that of someone else’s couture gown. One’s innate elegance is one’s style, something which makes him attractive to everyone-an individuality which everyone tries to emulate.
I think that even though a person might fancy himself/ herself in outfit out of GQ or Elle catalogues, the designer clothes would look awful if not complemented by one’s own aura of style. Most of the high-heel and band-aid sized skirt wearing girls who terrorise the so-called ‘ugly ducklings’ in high school usually look so self-conscious and ‘I’m-trying-so-hard-to-be-cool’, that the look is completely spoilt, even though the peer pressure exerted by them result in others feeling traumatised as they don’t seem to measure up. Each and every person has their own sense of fashion, even if it wearing their hair in two pigtails when tying one’s hair in a sexy oriental topknot may be all the rage.
