Stuff Eaten

allergies | family life

Today I learned that an almost-four-year-old boy has to consume about seven tablespoons of Gillette Fusion shaving cream before showing any ill effects (according to Poison Control, who is starting to get a rather hefty file for my son). Those ill effects will allegedly consist of some sort of unpleasant bowel movement. I'm waiting to find out whether the boy consumed more or less than seven tablespoons (I really think it was less). I can hardly stand the excitement.

In other food-related news, my daughter tried cantaloupe today. The only reason I offered it to her is because it is in the same plant family as watermelon and squash (bet ya didn't know that, did ya? Yeah, me neither, and I didn't care until recently). She tested negative for being allergic to squash, but she did react to a squash baby food. It may have been contaminated with something else, but I haven't gotten up the nerve to try again. Watermelon didn't cause any hives in the very small amounts in which I offered it. Cantaloupe went OK today, although she wasn't a big fan. She liked it better with a little sugar on it. Of course, she's only successfully eaten the hypoallergenic formula and green beans for ages so any new taste is really different.

Tomorrow will be the important day. If she is going to have a significant reaction, it will be on the second day (or any day after). It takes one exposure to create the antibodies so there shouldn't be a reaction on day one. Sometimes I don't see a reaction and yet she still shows positive on the skin test, which we have scheduled in the near future. There might be a gastro reaction going on then - she often doesn't eat well when reacting.

We did two days of cucumbers too, but I'm not sure she ate enough to properly react on the test. Need to try one more of those, I guess.

This is so.much.fun. I'm sure you can tell...
