Stop Celebrating Celebrities!
After sitting through one too many shows on E! today, I've decided that I just can't watch any more of those vapid celebrity hounding television shows. I am sick to death of watching Paris Hilton or any of the myriad of starlets and socialites that bombard our media today walk around in grotesquely expensive couture with their rat dogs stuffed into an LV or Coach bag. Enough already!
Why can't we talk about and admire all of the young men and women who are out in the African bush teaching people about AIDS awareness, or in Cambodia helping landmine victims? Is it because we as the American public aren't interested in real people? Almost everyone you see on Entertainment Tonight and on the covers of US Weekly, et. al. have really made zero contributions to society (although Angelina Jolie is an exception to the rule and has worked as an ambassador to several thrid world countries). They go shopping, drink, snort cocaine, go to rehab, relapse, party some more, tape themselves having sex, shop, party, shop, party, maybe star in a movie or two then shop and party some more.
I am starting to become extremely disillusioned because of all this. These are the vacuous, unscrupulous, spoiled "icons" that our children have to look up to. Whether we like it or not, the media force feeds us these caricatures (I can hardly recognize them as real people) and our kids are buying into it. Why can't we turn on the TV and watch a half an hour show on a group of kids that are in the Peace Corps or working for Greenpeace? That would be a nice and refreshing change.
And no, I have no issue with the existance of the entertainment industry. I have worked and been a part of it for over six years. My issue is with the entertainers that we choose to idolize. When a young person is gifted with talent (or in most cases, connections) beauty and a neverending bank account, why wouldn't they choose to give back to the world? Why concentrate solely on which designer to wear and what brand of champagne to pour all over themselves? I just don't get it. But these celebs do what they do because they continue to have an audience, and sadly enough continue to be admired.
What legacy are they leaving behind after they are no longer radiant with youth and all the reserves of Botox have been exhausted? Their closets will remain full of unworn, expensive items, their garages and driveways will still sport pimped out vehicles, and perhaps not more than a few blocks away a child will lay starving.
I can't watch these celebrity gossip shows anymore. It is too sad to watch this parade of superficial kids flaunt their excess when there are so many people dying of hunger, lack of healthcare and basic human necessities all over the world, including in this "the richest" country in the world. Our priorities are grossly out of order. I just hope the day comes that everyone decides to stop watching these shows and feeding into these altered egos we call celebrities. And may we then celebrate those who sacrifice themselves to make life better for others, who donate portions of their incomes to feed and clothe the needy. Let's make philanthropy and altruism "hot" . It is about damn time.
