Stop Celebrating Celebrities!

ModelMom's picture

After sitting through one too many shows on E! today, I've decided that I just can't watch any more of those vapid celebrity hounding television shows. I am sick to death of watching Paris Hilton or any of the myriad of starlets and socialites that bombard our media today walk around in grotesquely expensive couture with their rat dogs stuffed into an LV or Coach bag. Enough already!

Why can't we talk about and admire all of the young men and women who are out in the African bush teaching people about AIDS awareness, or in Cambodia helping landmine victims? Is it because we as the American public aren't interested in real people? Almost everyone you see on Entertainment Tonight and on the covers of US Weekly, et. al. have really made zero contributions to society (although Angelina Jolie is an exception to the rule and has worked as an ambassador to several thrid world countries). They go shopping, drink, snort cocaine, go to rehab, relapse, party some more, tape themselves having sex, shop, party, shop, party, maybe star in a movie or two then shop and party some more.

I am starting to become extremely disillusioned because of all this. These are the vacuous, unscrupulous, spoiled "icons" that our children have to look up to. Whether we like it or not, the media force feeds us these caricatures (I can hardly recognize them as real people) and our kids are buying into it. Why can't we turn on the TV and watch a half an hour show on a group of kids that are in the Peace Corps or working for Greenpeace? That would be a nice and refreshing change.

And no, I have no issue with the existance of the entertainment industry. I have worked and been a part of it for over six years. My issue is with the entertainers that we choose to idolize. When a young person is gifted with talent (or in most cases, connections) beauty and a neverending bank account, why wouldn't they choose to give back to the world? Why concentrate solely on which designer to wear and what brand of champagne to pour all over themselves? I just don't get it. But these celebs do what they do because they continue to have an audience, and sadly enough continue to be admired.

What legacy are they leaving behind after they are no longer radiant with youth and all the reserves of Botox have been exhausted? Their closets will remain full of unworn, expensive items, their garages and driveways will still sport pimped out vehicles, and perhaps not more than a few blocks away a child will lay starving.

I can't watch these celebrity gossip shows anymore. It is too sad to watch this parade of superficial kids flaunt their excess when there are so many people dying of hunger, lack of healthcare and basic human necessities all over the world, including in this "the richest" country in the world. Our priorities are grossly out of order. I just hope the day comes that everyone decides to stop watching these shows and feeding into these altered egos we call celebrities. And may we then celebrate those who sacrifice themselves to make life better for others, who donate portions of their incomes to feed and clothe the needy. Let's make philanthropy and altruism "hot" . It is about damn time.

Is it because we as the American public aren't interested in real people?

No. (These thoughts aren't original with me, but I don't remember where they came from. Perhaps you could look them up.) We can't gossip about real people, especially if they're doing stuff that make us look bad. On the other hand, if they're doing stuff that make us look good, we can run 'em down to our heart's content, forgetting for the moment that their sins are worth a million dollars a minute more than our lives.

The media force feed us these caricatures

No. Remember this old saw? "Rule 1. The customer is always right. Rule 2. If the customer is wrong, see Rule 1." The media give us what We the People will buy. Or they go out of business. Which is why TV news, over the past two decades, has gone from Walter Cronkite to National Enquirer. If We the People would actually buy the Peace Corps, it would be on prime time and American Idol would be on your local community access channel, maybe. The truth is, We the People wouldn't watch Peace Corps shows if the alternative was a firing squad. Probably because they give us nothing to feel good (or, more accurately perhaps, superior) about.

I can't watch these celebrity gossip shows anymore.

There's hope for you. See my author profile under "Television".

I hope you don't think I'm picking on you. But you raise thoughtful points. This one has been on my mind for a long while. You've given me a chance to mount my soapbox. Thanks. :).

it's what the people want!

Unfortunately, that's what people want to watch.

It is strangely addicting watching celebrities.

I lost hope for humanity the

IntricateGirl's picture

I lost hope for humanity the day I heard someone seriously say that they viewed Paris Hilton and Britney Spears as good role models because they had good business sense.

And yes, you are absolutely right. Those celebs who are doing work of real meaning are often lost in the parade of vapid bores. I would much rather have a conversation with Bono than Paris Hilton, because there is a chance for real conversation.

Amen IntricateGirl!

ModelMom's picture

You are 100% right on. And if you ever get Bono to sit down for a convo...PLEASE make sure to invite me. ;-) But seriously....Britney and Paris having good business sense? What is our country coming to? I can see how that would make you lose hope for humanity! They are surrounded by "yes" men & women....and they are the ones with the business how-to. Britney & Paris just have to walk around half naked and smile or stare vacantly into the distance.

If I remember correctly.....

IamTammy©'s picture

......that was said on an old episode of that crap show Elimidate.

That's almost embarrassing to admit, too.

I remember the statement, though.....because when the chick said that (she was a cop, or was going to 'cop' school, supposedly?), I sat here tellin' the worse half how stupid ho's like that give blonde bimbos like me a bad, bad name.

IamTammy© – March 6, 2006 – 9:55pm

Cop school....LOL

ModelMom's picture

Wow...now that must have been a doozy to watch! LOLOL!

ModelMom – March 8, 2006 – 9:13pm

MM~

IamTammy©'s picture

Ya know, I don't even watch that show on a regular basis~ and that's the ironic part. I just happened to be sitting here doing something on the bed (and no, bananas weren't involved) and I had turned the tv on for background noise. But I totally remember when that happened because Paris Hilton had just put that crap of a book out, and everything was Paris Paris Paris at that time, and that chick said she admired Paris Hilton, and I stopped what I was doing to watch that segment because I was.........stunned. lol Oh, I think she she was hosting a show on Nickelodeon or something around that time too. It was just mind boggling to me. I could take Britney being a role model before I could Paris. I mean, if given the choice.........or, if given the choice, I'd slap her upside of the head with a 2 x 4, just like I would Gary Coleman. I'm an equal opportunity head basher. hohoho~

IamTammy© – March 8, 2006 – 9:42pm

Wow. I haven't seen that.

IntricateGirl's picture

Wow. I haven't seen that. Does that mean there are two people that feel that way?? Ugh. *must go. feeling sick*
