Steve Perry "Oh Sherrie"

Perhaps no band was bigger in the US during the first few years of the '80s than Journey. 1981's Escape and 1983's Frontiers had spawned eight Top 40 hits in the US and the albums had sold close to 10 million copies combined. So, it wasn't surprising when lead singer Steve Perry stepped out on his own following the end of the tour for Frontiers.

"Oh Sherrie" became the first solo release from Perry in April of 1984 and served as the introduction to his Street Talk album. It wasn't much of a departure from his work with Journey, the emphasis on his soaring tenor and a hard-pop sound that managed to please both pop and rock fans.

Accompanied by an elaborate video, "Oh Sherrie" was a love song devoted to Perry's then-girlfriend (who appeared in the video with him). Not surprisingly, the song was embraced by radio, quickly rising up the charts. By May, "Oh Sherrie" had become Perry's first Top Ten solo hit, peaking at #3, the first of four hit singles from Street Talk that would chart over the next year, cementing Perry's popularity as one of the most successful voices of the '80s.
