The film The Mist, that recently came out last week was long overdue. I've been waiting for this movie since Stephen King wrote the short story in the Skeleton Crew book.
The only close thing to a movie from The Mist was the 3D Audio Book adaptation. It's really not an audiobook rather than a movie acted out on radio, like the old time radio mystery hour back in the 50s.
I had to re-read the short story again before I saw the movie, just so that I could get back into the swing of things and I must say that the Director Frank Darabont did a very fine job indeed.
There are some elements in the movie for dramatic effect or just to make things more clear. The creatures were done well too, but I'd rather have had the creatures more true to what Stephen King described in his short story. But, the animators did a good job with it. I just believe movies should stop relying on CGI or too much CGI. It ruins the feel of a movie's realism.
I was surprised by the ending as well. I wasn't expecting what I was expecting.
The movie did it's job in thrills, spills and kills. Frank Darabont is good at adapting Mr. King's novels and making them true to the book. Take for instance The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
You really felt for the characters and would root for them. In the case of my theater, at one point the audience applauded. I like going to theaters where a movie actually enthralls an audience and brings them into the cinema. We're not watching actors on screen but rather we're watching a realistic premise without actors. What I'm saying is, the characters come to life.
Now, when a movie makes an audience applaud or cheer, that means something. There's a lot of people out there, though, who feel otherwise. They don't appreciate it when an audience cheers. Why not? They're getting their money's worth, aren't they? I mean, that's what they paid for? It's like going to a live performance and at there are moments when the audience gets involved. No one says anything about that. Why not? It's a theater, too, isn't it?
The Mist captures Stephen King's writings to it's truest form and making it come to life from paper. But, I was surprised at the end. If you like horror movies that have a plot and great characters and like being entertained, then The Mist is the movie for you this year.
