Stars On 45 "Medley"

Pop Go The 80s's picture

One of the most prefabricated acts in the history of pop music was, undoubtedly, Stars On 45. The group was the brainchild of Dutch producer Jaap Eggermont, who had been a member of the band Golden Earring for a period of time. Not only were Stars On 45 not an actual band - they were a collection of session musicians - they didn't even perform original songs.

Instead, Stars On 45's repertoire consisted of was medleys of hit songs from, primarily, the '60s, particularly The Beatles. As the original songs were already well-known hits, it would seem that there would have been little interest in pale imitations. However, Eggermont set them all to a fairly ordinary disco beat and, somehow, captured (albeit briefly) the imagination of listeners.

Consisting of the songs "Venus," "sugar, Sugar," "No Reply," "I'll Be Back," "Drive My Car," "Do You Want To Know A Secret," "We Can Work It Out," "I Should Have Known And Better," "Nowhere Man," and "You're Going To Loose That Girl," the single "Medley" became a #1 smash hit in the US. The song spent much of the summer of 1981 blaring from Top 40 radio, but, due to their lack of originality, Stars On 45 is one of the more forgotten chart-topping songs in pop music history.
