For all you BCS haters out there, there is talk that the system will be tweaked, Again. I know this is a belabored subject, but it is my job to give you all the skinny on these types of things.
For all not in the loop, the BCS stands for the Bowl Championship Series. It is the method and organization used to pick which teams play in the most prestigious and most lucrative college football bowl games. Apparently there will now be five BCS games instead of four, with one of the sites hosting two games. The Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona will be the first site that gets a chance at the double hosting. The fifth game will take place a week after the other four games have been played. I am not sure how exactly the two teams will be picked to play in that extra game. One thing I do know is that this will not solve the problem.
As long as you have a mathematical formula or even people deciding who should have the right to play in these games there will always be potential problems lingering. The BCS only works out in the mind of the masses when there are two clear cut teams above the rest and the same will be true here. To me, this also affects the way the teams are picked for the preliminary BCS games. You can not have a game between USC and Texas as a preliminary game the way you did last year when they were the two best teams. Like I mentioned in a blog a few days ago, you play the regular season as good as possible to put yourself in the best position to succeed in the post season. It would not be fair to pit the two best teams against each other in a preliminary match.
I agree that only a playoff system will give a clear cut winner, but I am not so sure I like that either. As long as I have been alive, teams were invited to bowl games and the Associated Press voted on who was the best team at the end of the year. That was, until the BCS came along. At least the BCS tries to match up the two best teams unlike before when you were invited to a bowl game mostly because the conference you played in. I know that sometimes change is necessary like a wild card game in baseball, but I am not so sure it necessary in this particular situation. I cannot say that I would be totally against a playoff system, but bowl games would really lose their merit and it would also make the season extremely long.
Again, there would be discussions on why these particular 8 teams were chosen to be in the playoff. There would be a new computer program to pick the playoff teams. At that point, there would be too much “tweaking going on. We know it’s all about the benjamins. Fox bought the broadcast rights for these games for $320M. However, the Rose Bowl which owns its own broadcast rights will still be televised on ABC. I believe each team gets $14.5M for a BCS Bowl invite. This money is redistributed to the rest of the schools throughout the conference. This is where the corruption comes in and winning takes precedent over education and I am sure you all know how that goes. Another belabored point.
On another note, I made a man retire from playing Madden yesterday. Dude was killing me on the ground and I threw about 5 picks in the first half. Football is a game of adjustments. In the second half I used only one defensive play. And it was a goal line defense at that. That shut down his run game and I played centerfield with my safety. 6 user picks later the Arizona Cardinals triumphed. It's the small victories in life that keep me going, you know? Right now I am going to watch Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay. Here’s the deal:
NBA Playoffs:
chicago(+7) over MIAMI
CLIPPERS(-3) over denver
washington(+4.5) over CLEVELAND
NEW JERSEY(-7.5) over indiana
SAN ANTONIO(-10) over sacramento
**I have appeared to get ahead of myself a bit. The only NBA games tonight are the first two so the other picks are subject to change.
MLB: I was 8-3 yesterday
CUBS over marlins
NATS over reds
PHILLS over rockies
BREW CREW over braves
ASTROS over dodgers-Lowe vs Petitte-take under on total runs, hits, and errors
CARDS over pirates
diamondbacks over FATHERS
RANGERS over A's
tigers over ANGELS-Detroit is the real deal this year
pale hose over MARINERS-Chi Town goes for 9 in a row
HOME TEAMS IN CAPS
Happy Betting!!!
