Spider "New Romance"

The band Spider wouldn't exactly set the music world on fire during their brief time together in the early '80s. However, two members would go on to far greater success following the band's demise. Drummer Anton Fig would perform as a session player on albums by numerous acts including Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Kiss, and Madonna. Keyboardist and backup singer Holly Knight would become an in-demand songwriter, penning songs like Heart's "Never," Tina Turner's "The Best," Aerosmith's "Rag Doll," and Pat Benatar's "Invincible." She would also front the rock trio Device in the later '80s, singing lead on their Top 40 hit "Hanging On A Heart Attack."
Spider, like Device, would only manage to notch one US Top 40 hit during their two-album lifetime. It would come from their self-titled 1980 debut album in the guise of a song called "New Romance." Not heavy enough to be hard-rock, "New Romance" was driven by the keyboard sound that would dominate airwaves during the early '80s. It's upbeat melody was pleasant but forgettable, sustaining enough interest to just eke its way onto the charts.
"New Romance" managed to spend two weeks at #39 and was gone. Spider would place two more singles onto the Hot 100 over the next year and release one more album, 1981's Between The Lines, but would quickly be gone. Unlike many one-hit wonders whose lone hit was due to a song that was quirky or even novelty-based, "New Romance" was so pedestrian that Spider remains one of the lesser-known singular sensations.
