Sparkling Summer Beverages

Each season presents certain obstacles to weight loss, depending on where you live.

In general, most people don’t get outside for walks often in the winter or the rainy season. If you don’t make an effort to replace outdoor activities with indoor activities, like going to the gym, joining an indoor sport, or using exercise DVDs, it can be difficult to maintain a high level of physical activity.

In the summer it’s easier to get outdoors, take long walks, and go for bicycle rides. However, depending on where you live, the heat can add an extra level of challenge to these activities.

I live in a moderate climate, and I find that it’s much easier to get daily physical activity in the summer by just doing more things outside. Yet, I’ve noticed that the sunny weather, and the general elevation in mood, brings out my desire for ice cold beverages.

Some of these can be very sugary or loaded with artificial sweeteners that I’d rather not put into my body. I usually sip tea during the winter to keep my mind off excessive snacking, but the last thing I want on a hot summer day is cup after cup of steaming tea while I’m working on the computer or visiting with someone.

So for a little treat, and to stay on track for healthy weight loss, I buy all different kinds of sparkling water. Depending on where you live and where you shop, you might have to read a few labels to find what you’re looking for.

I choose water that is naturally gaseous, not carbonated, with only natural flavors added. No sugar. No artificial sweeteners. Just a squeeze of lemon or lime can give a little zing to your water. My favorite so far is a raspberry-mint flavored sparkling water. It sounded hideous, so I had to try it, and it was delicious!

If all the sparkling waters you find are carbonated or contain added sweeteners, just go for a bottle of Perrier and a lemon wedge to quench your thirst and mellow out those summer munchies.
