Sometimes You Just Can't Get Away With It

bad eating habits | desserts | long range goals

I was at a meeting yesterday morning of my consultant's group. It was actually well attended, probably the biggest group we've had in a few years, because the presenter is well known in our area, and most people knew he was going to be dynamic.

Our group always serves a breakfast. The caterer also brings over homemade cinnamon buns and apple turnovers. Usually I don't partake of these things, at least over the last few months, but this morning I figured why not have one. So I ate my breakfast, then had the apple turnover. It was okay, not great, but there's something about glaze that's just compelling to me; oh yeah, it's sweet.

I went to throw my dishes away and I saw there were two turnovers left. I didn't touch them, thinking someone else might want one and I'd already had mine, and went to sit back down. Then I decided I wanted a bottle of water, got back up, saw the turnovers still there, but still didn't take one and sat down. Then I had trouble opening the bottle because it was wet and I couldn't get a grip, and I knew we'd run out of napkins, so I went to the bathroom to grab some paper towels.

On the way back, I'm getting ready to walk past the turnovers, when one of them seemed to be calling me. I figured hey, why not, as everyone was sitting down, so I grabbed the one with the most glaze and started to walk to my seat.

Well, one of the people at the meeting is a friend of mine, though she was a visitor to the group for the day, and she happens to read both my business newsletter and my business blog. She stops me as I'm walking by and asks me what I'm doing. I'm confused, so she looks at the turnover and says "You already had one of those because I saw you eating it. How are you going to stick to your goal for the year if you eat that?" Then it hit me; as one of my goals for the year, I'm supposed to be trying to lose 25 pounds. She had me dead to rights; ugh!

She holds her hands out and says "Let me have that." What could I do? I paused, looked at it, realized she was right, and I gave it to her. The guys laughed, but hey, she'd caught me and decided to help me, and, well, I went ahead and let her help me. The truth is that I really wasn't craving it, it wasn't great, but there is something compelling about that sugar beast that will eventually just suck you in sometimes.

Nope; sometimes you just can't get away with stuff, especially when the world knows about it.

So that's how

...you do it. You tell everyone you know and no one let's you get away with slacking off! Now don't be naughty Catfish. (As if I could talk)

Catfish's picture

Actually, Xingtiao,...

that's precisely why I did it. It's that whole "community" thing, you know. My friends know that sometimes I just do something like that because it's me. The guys never say anything, but the women do. I think that's an interesting commentary on men and women, now that I think about it.

well, well, well, now Catfish

have to admire your honesty here. All I can say is kudos to that friend for watching out for you, and reminding you of your goals.
You just never know who you may run into that knows all to well about your goals....we could be anywhere, any place, anytime,.....know what I'm saying, lol.

Catfish's picture

I certainly do, Ammorton,...

which is why I put it out there; I could use all the help I can get!

Next time you are tempted Catfish

go to a Diabetes Clinic...have a serious look around there, and IF you can still want a donut, I'll be amazed!

Catfish's picture

I go, Sassys,...

remember, I'm diabetic. It's not what you might think it is; at least the one I go to isn't. Unfortunately, that type of negative reinforcement rarely works on anyone; stopping has to be more of a positive emotion for it to work.

So, I'm working on more positive emotions; kind of tough these days at times.

Well when I worked at the hospital Catfish

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

the Diabetes Clinic was the one place I hated to interpret in...I hated it more than the Burn Clinic, and that's saying something! I saw more dismembered people, enough to last me a lifetime! If I thought that a donut could lead me to losing a foot, hell I wouldn't even look twice at one. But I get what you are saying...it's like showing a smoker a pair of lungs that have been used by a smoker, it's disgusting to look at but it's apparently not disgusting enough!

Exactly, Sassys,...

the thing is, my glucose is under great control right now, something I couldn't say 3 months ago. I'm eating much better, but I've never quite fully killed the cravings. It's not conscious with me at times, and that's when it can start to get, well, bad. It's about to be an interesting week, though, as my wife is going out of town starting tomorrow, which will leave me alone for 5 nights. But the meals are all pre-planned, and if I can stick very close to my eating schedule, I should be fine. It's the two days I won't be home during the schedule, at meetings and such, when things could possibly go awry. But Ill be fine. :-)

Catfish there must be something else

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

that is naturally sweet that you can use to deal with those cravings no?

Catfish's picture

Not really, Sassys,...

I can't eat the non-sugar stuff because it's sweetened with the sugar alcohols, and those beat up my stomach. Honey works for a short while, mainly because you can't just sit down and eat a bunch of honey like a Pooh bear. :-) Thing is, I don't need tons of it, so when my wife is home doling it out in little bits I'm fine. On my own, though,... well, you know what it's like when you get the hidden treat.

Well then you should ask your wife to play hide

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

and seek with treats for you while she is gone...she can't leave you all the treats in the same spot because you are you...so hide them she must...it could be a fun little treasure hunt for you...and you only get one clue a night that you must get from her personally...no point in leaving the clues...you are too smart for that!

Catfish's picture

Well now, Sassys,...

you added an interesting twist to it all. She has stuff all over the house, but because I know she'll give me stuff in the evening, I'd had no reason to snoop. I'll have to mention it to her, but she may not have enough time to set it all up. She hasn't even packed yet.

See Catfish? You are already

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

sabotaging yourself...goofy, goofy fellow! LOL You know she has stuff hidden from you right? So now why would you make her hide it all over again eh? BECAUSE you already know where it all is...AHA!! FESS UP YOU TREAT HEATHEN!!

Catfish's picture

Actually, I don't Sassys,...

I have found stuff in the past, but I haven't found anything in a long time because I haven't been looking for it. And I'm thinking I should because last night she pulled out Girl Scout cookies from somewhere, and now I'm wondering where they are.

I hope she took them with her Catfish! HAH!

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

That's what ya get for the future snooping!!

Catfish's picture

Mean, Sassys,...

y'all are just mean! Course, you also have to remember that I have my own money, and the store is literally a six minute walk, which means a much shorter drive. I'm just saying,...

Seeeeee? UGH!

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

Now you would walk to the store? Or you are going to drive there? At least get the exercise dude!

Catfish's picture

It would depend, Sassys,...

on how bad the craving was. Oh yeah, and whether or not it was raining, and if it's dark outside. Never know what's coming out of those woods. In general, though, if it's nice I'd walk. Gas prices; need I say more?
